Man Arrested On EasyJet Flight Today

Mon Nov 15, 2004 12:12 am

A man was arrested on todays easyJet flight today for failing to hand over a can of pepper spray, the spray fell out of his hand luggage as he boarded the aircraft. The cabin crew asked him to hand it over but he refused, the captain then got involved asking for the spray to be handed over, the passenger still refused and the captain then called the police who then arrested the man and took him away.

How did it ever get past the security screening?

Under what charges was he arrested? I mean, what happens to the guy next, will he be released and be allowed to board another flight or what will happen? In any case, what an a$$hole!

Pepper sprays are a prohibited weapon in the UK. It is an offence to possess or import them.

There are also airline rules concerning noxious substances and also their own weapon carriage policy. Easyjet doesn't accept weaponry of any kind IIRC, not even hold checked and otherwise legal guns.

If he is released on bail or given a caution, then he is not convicted as such and provided he complies with bail conditions can board another flight. Whether Easyjet accept him for carriage is another matter.

Then why did the cabin crew give the guy a second chance? If its considered a weapon shouldn't the police been notified immediately? Can the airline be held responsible in any way? btw, where did this incident happen and on what flight?

Well, I dunno... My girlfriend and I recently took a EZY flight CDG (T3) to LTN, and upon unpacking at our friends' home, she realized she had accidentally carried a set of large scissors AND my Swiss Army knife in her purse . Security at CDG either did not detect them or overlooked...

"Where did i say the cabin crew give him a second chance??"
Well, it says that the police was called only after the guy refused several times to hand the can in. So if he would have handed in the pepper spray as soon as it was discovered would he have been denied to board anyway?

I got my Swiss army knife basically "destroyed" because I didn't leave the checkpoint and submit to being researched. I felt bad right after I had given it over to TSA and they told me it had already been "destroyed" so I couldn't get it back. This was a AUS-ORD-LHR flight I took last summer. (06/03)

That guy with the pepper spray is indeed an a$$hole If I was on the flight I would have used his spray on him.  Smile

In regards to lax security at airports...I've often wondered, standing in line waiting to get checked at AUS, how easy it would be to get on board with something. Those TSA officials are still pretty asleep if they haven't had their coffee in the morning. Doesn't make me feel very safe knowing that.

Hi,

I flew with EZY from AMS-LPL in August. About 10 minutes prior to landing a passenger started shouting and hurling abusive language at the Cabin Crew member who told him that if he didn't stop he would be arrested. Of course, he continued and after landing the captain announced that we would have to wait for the Police to join the aircraft before anybody could de-board and that nobody was to leave their seats. The man burst into tears.  Smile

Not being too familiar with pepper sprays, but wouldn't they look like an ordinary aerosol can of deodourant on an x-ray machine?

No, normal cans of deodorant they are definitely not banned on flights, I agree with the question though - it would take a very vigilant security screening agent to pick up the difference!

Personally, I think that the Police should have been called immediately.

As it was, some people are too stupid to take the opportunity presented to them.

If you are carrying an Offensive Weapon and are given the opportunity to hand it over and go on your way, you hand it over. The prat deserves everything that he gets.

Well done, Easyjet - I hope they get sent to jail (not that he will). Bad enough to be caught with a dangerous weapon like that, but then refusing to hand it over, what an idiot !
