Your Opinion Of JFK And EWR

Sun Mar 12, 2000 4:12 am

What is your opinion of Newark International Airport and JFK in Queens New York. I plan to fly soon and I can't decide what airport to fly out off. I'm judging in all aspects. Please don't hold back tell me your experiences.

Unless you're flying CO, Newark is the worst airport ever built. Especially if you are waiting to pick somebody up, you can't meet them at the gate and there are no seats outside of security. There are always delays. I have been miserable 99% of the time I have been there.

JFK isn;'t much better, it is hard to get around the terminals and the traffic is horrible. Whomever decided that each airline could build its own terminal was certainly not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

I will say, it is nice to see all the different airlines and planes from around the world. I just wish NYC had better gateways to greet them.

I have flown out of EWR for the past 19 years. It is true that you cannot greet individuals at the gate (due to security) For the most part though, I never truly see delays. 99% of my flights leave very close to their scheduled time. It really depends on where you are going. Are you flying internationally or domestic?

Neither one of them is a great deal. EWR does seem to have more that it's fair share of delays. It also has very limitied parking. I have never parked any closer than the furthest lot. The monorail system is ok when it works, but I sat in between stations several weeks ago during an ice storm for almost 35 minutes....at 1:A.M in the morning!!!

If your flying overseas, you don't have much choice. If your flying within the US, you may want to consider LGA, or even Westchester County (HPN). Depends on where you live. I fly out of Stewart Airport (SWF) in Newburgh, NY quite often. It doesn't have a whole lot of flights, but you can be in and/or out of there in very little time. It's the best of both worlds - small convenient terminal...BIG 11,000 foot runway (13,000 with thresholds). It also has an Air National Guard wing of C-5 Galaxy cargo aricraft, which can make for some good plane spotting if you have extra time.

I Like JFK cause there are tons of large planes from EVERYWHERE you can basically think of. The airport kind of has a messed up layout, and is always crowded, and it is not in the best shape. I have also had a slight problem with some employees(one made us miss our connecting flight to RIC and we had to spend the night in NYC) but generally they are very kind and helpful. With Newark I have only been there once while making a connecting flight into SFO. We flew around 6:00 and didnt have any delays.

I have always flown into JFK - but not by choice. If you travel into JFK with British Airways its great - Ba has their own terminal and arriving and departure is a fairly comfortable experience. I've flown in twice with KLM and that terminal building KLM uses is an absolute disgrace. Check-in is a nightmare, there are no facilities airside (except for a tiny bar and an even smaller news-kiosk). The departure gates are a shambles where no one knows who's going or coming and as far as shopping goes - there is a small selection of vending machines available - the duty-free shop (again - rather small) was closed on both occasions - perhaps because it was 8pm.

Getting into NY from JFK is also a nightmare - the taxi is probably the best and quickest. Newark has the advantage of a train link into Manhattan - but as I said - never flown through it due to inconvenient schedules with BA and KLM.

I live in NY and think both EWR and JFK are equal. For domestic flights I try to go out of HPN, which is less crowded, but the parking can get cramped there.
EWR I think has the best customs facilities of the two, the large glass windows in the customs area gives you something to look at while in line. Also it is far and away much cleaner than any customs facility at JFK. Parking there is limited- I try to get a taxi or other transportation when going- either that or I leave very early to allow for time lost looking for a spot.
JFK is a mess driving out- its impossible to get around because of the traffic. If you don't know where you are going its very difficult to get around- I got lost once and asked an airport security woman for directions and she refused to help. However, the flight selection is better at JFK and I usually wind up going out of JFK due to the better flight selection...

I am flying to New York next month and was faced with the same decision. I decided to fly in and out of Newark as I heard it is less crowded and just as easy to get to the city from. JFK is big and bustling and neat in those respects, but I understand that EWR is a bit more user-friendly. I guess I'll find out...

I fly Virgin out of JFK through Terminal 1. Very convienient. Customs are nice. Plenty of resteraunts. News kiosks all over with a waterfall and very modern. American Airlines and the international terminal will be torn down to make room for a new one much more modern. Enought room for over 50 airlines. JFK is almost done with sky train (monerail) American will have heir new terminal by 2001 and the international terminal will be done late this year or early 2001. Keep tabs on JFK's improvements. The problem with La Guardia is that the runways are too short and a little risky to land a plane on. You have to watch out that you don't hit the near by street lamps annd tall buildings and if you don't stop in time- bear in mind that Flushing Bay is on the other end. This would definantly blemish on a pilot's record

I have been flying many times to JFK and EWR in last the 6 or 7 years. All fligths by Swissair out of ZRH. I think it depends on the arrival time and your destination in N.Y.
JFK is one of the worst airports if you arrive in the after-noon. Once I had to wait 2 hours (or more) at customs and then one hour to get a taxi! This was at Delta-Airlines terminal. Perhaps it gets better in the new terminal 4.
The last few times I took a late flight to EWR. Arriving at about 9.30pm (SR104). It was always great. Modern terminal, no waiting at customs and a fast baggage pick-up.

I agree with CV990a, I always use HPN in preference to JFK/EWK/LGA where possible (domestic only). In my experience there isn't much difference between EWR and JFK, only EWR is slightly less convenient for me due to distance.

As noted by the many contributors to this post, the JFK experience can vary greatly, depending on the terminal you are departing/arriving in, and also the time of day. If you fly an airline with their own terminal at JFK, (AA/BA/Delta/TWA/United) it's usually not too bad, but watch out for that international terminal!
