When/why Did SQ Axe Vienna?

Mon Nov 15, 2004 8:14 pm

When was that? And why? What aircraft did they fly there with?

Lauda used to fly to Hong Kong via Bangkok. Not anymore. Wonder if Austrian will give it a try.

There are heaps of Asian and Hong Kong people visiting Europe. Lots of tours each day. Increasingly, Vienna is getting more and more popular.

Large volumes of pax doesn't guarantee a profit. If it is low yield, especially when it is high in tourist traffic, you are back to right where u started from - nil profit - or worse, negative profit!

Just look at Garuda's route to AMS. I think it has been axed from the network as we speak.

i think it was about a year after they canx the freighter flights bsl-vie-dxb-sin. that was in '97.
on the freighter run yields ex austria were extremely low so nobdoy was surprised they stopped. bsl yields were a bit higher but compared to yields ex scandinavia it was nothing.

Late 1998. Route was unprofitable, really poor yields.

SQ would rather route everyone through its hub it shares with LH in FRA. Codesharing with LH effectively killed VIE, amongst other european destinations that it found more effective giving its onward passengers to LH's flights instead of flying there themselves.

I remember flying with SQ back in 1994 on a 743, routing was VIE-ATH-SIN. Later they had upgraded to a 744 still with a stop at ATH. In my recollection they had terminated the service briefly in the mid-90s before reinstating it again with a 343 VIE-SIN nonstop. Few years back they pulled out for good.

MH seems to go along the same lines with their VIE service as they keep changing their mind each season.

The B7E7 might or might not make this route profitable for SQ. Note that OS fly this route and SQ codeshares, but I think it is only 3x weekly.
