Air France-KLM Chairman and CEO Jean-Cyril Spinetta Named '2004 Person Of The Year'
Tuesday November 16, 8:00 am ET
Awarded by The French-American Chamber Of Commerce

NEW YORK, Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The French American Chamber of Commerce has named Jean-Cyril Spinetta, Chairman and CEO of Air France-KLM, as its 2004 Person of the Year for his exemplary contributions to French-American business relations.
The Award

The Award was presented to Mr. Spinetta on November 15, 2004 at a ceremony in New York City. The Person of the Year Award was created in 1984 to honor executives and their companies that have contributed to the development of strong trade relations between France and the United States. Mr. Spinetta is the 21st honoree of this award.

"The North Atlantic corridor has been, and continues to be, the virtual backbone of the Air France global network," said Mr. Spinetta, accepting the award. "This ongoing commitment reflects the long history of our presence in the U.S. marketplace."

In addition, Mr. Spinetta discussed plans to expand the airline's presence in the U.S. by increasing capacity with additional flights from New York, a third daily flight from Washington and, in the very near future, by opening new gateways including Detroit.

"We are honored to recognize Jean-Cyril Spinetta for his unrelenting vision and determination that ensured the growth of Air France-KLM into one of the leading global airlines amidst challenging times in the airline industry," said Serge Bellanger, president, French American Chamber of Commerce. "Mr. Spinetta has demonstrated his commitment to furthering French-American commercial development by expanding the airline's reach in the U.S. and building strategic partnerships through the SkyTeam alliance."

Building Ties between The U.S. and Europe

Under Mr. Spinetta's direction, Air France has established its position as a global leader in the airline industry. He was recently responsible for bringing Air France into the merger that created the number one airline group in terms of revenue, Air France-KLM. Additionally, Mr. Spinetta was one of the principle architects of the SkyTeam global airline alliance. With three U.S. carriers, Delta Air Lines, Continental and Northwest, SkyTeam is now one of the world's leading and fasting growing alliances.

Currently Chairman of the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) Board of Governors for the period 2004 - 2005, Mr. Spinetta also served as Chairman of the Association of European Airlines in 2001.

About Air France-KLM

Air France-KLM is the world's leading airline group in terms of turnover, and the European leader in terms of passengers carried. With service to more than 101 long haul destinations, the Air France-KLM group transports more than 66 million passengers annually. Does NW operate a DTW-CDG? And would Air France operate a CLE-CDG maybe once a week in the summer with a 767?

Okay I have to bite on this one...he mentioned "gateways" in the US/North America that AF is looking at opening. Okay, DTW will be one but are there others that AF might open? SEA, DEN, or maybe (PLEASE PLEASE) they'll open back up their operations to DFW. With Delta as good as gone maybe that won't work but what about SEA? New Orleans? Other than that I can't see any other gateways that could support an A343, which is what they'll probably use on any new transatlantic routes.

I would imagine that they would give serious consideration to MSP. I think that Seattle is a decent possibility. NW operates to AMS, but I have heard that BA's loads are quite good on that route, so perhaps there is enough for Paris as well. Since Horizon feeds NW, I assume that it would feed them as well. Anyone know what the level of travel between Arizona and France is? That airport is growing considerably. Anyone know how LH and BA are doing? Actually, does BA still fly there?

Yes.

And would Air France operate a CLE-CDG maybe once a week in the summer with a 767?

Since AF doesn't fly 767's, I'm guessing that would be a no.

Arabs are going to flood this Detroit flight because of AF's excellent connections to the Middle East.

Especially Lebanese and Palestinians...

They can connect on one of the three flights (two operated by MEA, one operated by Air France) to Beirut.

If they introduced MSP-CDG, it, in fact, would surprise me greatly if they did so with a DC-10. That just doesn't make any sense to me, I guess.

This is a long overdue route for AF- it's shame it took NW joining Skyteam for them to start flying it.

How can they fly 3times to IAD? AF has no feed in IAD and LH which has feed on both sides only flies 2times from FRA.

AF is becoming an impressive threat to LH and BA!

What doesn't make sense, NWACLC, is that they'd start it with one of their older birds instead of one of their fancy new ones that would arguably compete better in a new market. I think it makes perfect sense for the route itself--and as a local Twin Citian, I'm really pulling for it--but if you are going to compete for some new business, why throw your oldest wares at it? That's the part that doesn't make sense about what you claimed.

Sorry for the confusion,
Mike

ummm. am I missing the joke here, or does everyone here still think AF still has DC-10s in their fleet?

if AF were to start MSP-CDG or DTW-CDG they would most likely have 333s or 343s on the route.

I guess this move makes it highly unlikely that we'll ever see them returning to CVG, and definitely not to DFW, for that matter. This Alliance building has opened up a couple of new gateways in the US, and the secondary hubs are likely to be the prime victims of this move. CVG, MEM and CLE are all finding themselves in the same situation, although CVG seems to be in the best position to maintain at least some transatlantic flights.

No, VS346, but NWACLC implied that NW would start the route with the DC-10's that they have, not that AF would start the route with the DC-10's that they surely don't have. Frankly, I'm with you...I really would think that AF would start the MSP-CDG route, but I don't have the financial proof nor the fleet availability info at my fingertips to back up that claim. Call it a hunch, I guess.

You know, with Skyteam, I would have hoped that we'd see AF serve places other than major Skyteam hubs that already serve a given route.

SEA, DFW, MSP would be examples of places that don't already have CDG service and would expand Skyteam options.

Mikey711MN,

If MSP can support three NW DC-10's a day MSP-AMS it can certainly support a MSP-CDG DC-10.

JoFMO,

Don't forget LH also places it codes on 2 UA flights from IAD to FRA as well. So that is 4 total IAD-FRA flights a day on Star Alliance carriers. I too am skeptical about 3 daily flights from IAD to CDG. They must be getting a lot of connex.

What about MEM-CDG soon or SLC-CDG?  Smile/happy/getting dizzy Not likely!

Bob, why would you say that? MSP-AMS is the only European route out of MSP except the Icelandair service. Also, tons of people connect in MSP on their way to AMS or onward to (anyplace on KLM). They are probably under 50% local, perhaps under 30%.

MSP-CDG might work OK, but then again, it's no better than DTW-CDG unless you live in MSP. Just because locals in MSP would get a non-stop is not a good reason for MSP-CDG to commence, and I don't expect it to. It would rely too heavily on the local MSP-CDG market, which is much smaller than an A330.

No, NW also flies MSP-LGW.

It's not just about MSP locals. There are a slew of cities in the Mountains and in the West that are served from MSP-only (i.e. not from Detroit). This would reduce the need for double connections in a lot of cities in NW's network, and I think MSP-CDG would do well.

SLC CDG would have no other Trans Atlantic competition and have the benefit of a Skyteam hub at both ends! Makes more sense than PDX.

Supa7E7,

"Tons of people connect in MSP on their way to AMS"

Wouldn't tons of people be likely to connect in MSP on the way to CDG? If DTW is able to support both AMS & CDG with connections why not MSP?

Northwest does not rely on local O&D for either its MSP or DTW Europe flights.

Bob,

I have always thought that MSP even had enough O&D to support more European service than they have now, the connecting opportunities to the west that N670UW mentions not withstanding. Again, my point was that I would be surprised to see NW start any new transatlantic routes with anything but an A332/3.

I am doing DTW-ORD-CDG-MUC and would love to drop the DTW-ORD segment!

It's a Worldperks Award and I wanted to fly AF this year!
