QF To Extend Codeshare With Air France

Fri Nov 19, 2004 1:22 am

Qantas is reportedly mulling an extended codeshare relationship with Air France into Asia, less than a month after QF's started putting its code on AF's flights between SIN and CDG.

As reported, Geoff Dixon had made an overnight visit to Paris last week to discuss a co-pricing arrangement with Air France for other Asian destinations. China, was said to be a high contender, since the French carrier already flies to 4 Chinese destinations (HKG, PEK, PVG and CAN).

The idea is interesting but admittedly out of my comprehension...It reads terribly odd to me that QF expects Aussie pax to backtrack as much as flying first to Europe then detour to China...

I think its far more likely that QF will put its code on flights to/from Paris to/from Chinese airports, and feed these flights with their own services from SYD/MEL. As an alternate to SIN.

Oh that makes more sense to me now, thanks.  Smile

Apparently CX will be deispleased when QF opts to codeshare with a Skyteam competitor than itself. In the end, if QF's aiming to further its relationship with AF, there are only 2 Chinese markets where the idea can put into practice, namely HKG and PVG, where the airline actually flies to in the first place...

I think it's a very smart idea from QF : CHINA is a huge blooming market. Make a stop in CHINA on the way to/from Australia rather than the boring "traditional" SIN will certainly please and attract many people.

What is surprising me that QF chose AF... and not a OneWorld partner.
OK, AF is the N°1 European Airline to China and the first feedback of the partnership QF/AF on the Europe/SIN/Australia are very positive and encouraging, from both PAX and Airlines sides...Though, I find quite strange such a close important cooperation between two supposed competitors airlines, unless....  Acting devilish

FLYSSC

QF seem to not be terriabley worried about partner/code share airlines being in competing alliances. Just last weekend I brought tickets to Europe for my wife & myself at Christmas and the best deal(that had seats available) was with QF to NRT, then with "Qantas partner airline" SK to CPH! Can even earn QF FF points for the SK sectors!

I dont know the history of this one but SK is not an airline I would normally associate with QF.

it would be really interesting to see the 2 carriers to codeshare in and out of PVG. What i mean is that there has long been a carrier on the route already just not many people notice that: MU. and both QF and AF codeshare with MU in addition to their own metals. it will be interesting to see AF and QF bring more traffic through PVG.

I also find it interesting that all these EU carriers are expanding in China and BA are only increasing their frequencies to PEK and HKG, with no plans to fly to PVG and CAN.

Maybe their relationship with QF isn't that "rosy" anymore and QF are looking at other "alliances", especially with their proposal to cooperate jointly with SQ on the A380.
