LAN To Skyteam Or Korean To Oneworld?

Mon Nov 22, 2004 11:30 pm

Please read below...I am very confused, why did LAN go with Korean and not Cathay Pacific ??

Chile's LAN, Korean Air, sign commercial alliance
Mon Nov 22, 2004 09:22 AM ET
SANTIAGO, Chile, Nov 22 (Reuters) - Chile's LAN airlines and Korean Air, which both have big cargo divisions as well as intercontinental passenger services, signed a commercial alliance that will increase connections between Latin America and South Korea, LAN said on Monday.
The LAN-Korean air agreement includes code sharing on flights, and will give Korean Air (003490.KS: Quote, Profile, Research) passengers more flight options to Latin America, and Latin Americans more flights and connections to get to South Korea, LAN said in a statement.

The two airlines will also link their frequent-flier programs under the deal, LAN said.

South Korea and Chile entered into a free trade agreement this year and South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun was in Chile on the weekend for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders' summit.

The leaders of South Korea and China toured South America before the annual APEC summit, which focuses on trade and security, forging business deals in Argentina, Brazil and China.

LAN (LAN.SN: Quote, Profile, Research) (LFL.N: Quote, Profile, Research) , which already has flights throughout the Americas, and to Europe, Australia, and Asia, has said it wants to take advantage of the new trade links with Asia to move into that region.

LAN is also exploring the possibility of adding a Sydney-Bali flight, an official from Indonesia told Reuters over the weekend.

It doesn't mean anything. Airlines codeshare regardless of their alliances.

Case in point: QF/AF codeshares CDG-SIN, CX/SA codeshares JNB-HKG,
VS/SQ codeshares SIN-LHR, VS/MH codeshares SYD-KUL-LHR.. to name a few.

No offence intended, but somehow I sense that this is more of an Indonesian politician's wishful thinking rather than LAN's intention.

LOL! Which would beg the question, what on earth does LAN have to do with anything? Unless there's some long-standing Indonesian-Chilean connection I've completely mossed.

Actually, LAN also codeshares with MX and AM for Mexico/Chile market, so as said, this does not mean anything.

Anyway, it could be nice to see LAN colors through Skyteam skies...

Cargo, Cargo Cargo. KE and LA have been talking about this for years. Will I get my SPA now?

I just realized I added absolutely nothing to the conversation.

As it has been said earlier...it has nothing to do with this...airlines sign agreements no matter what. Look at DL and UAL having mileage priviledges and so forth. No one is going anywhere.

LAN to Bali was brought up pre-9/11. I guess they are finally considering it again.

Pre-9/11, the plan was Santiago (SCL) - Madrid (MAD) - Beirut (BEY) - Denpasar (DPS) - Sydney (SYD) and back as a 3x or 4x weekly A340-300 service.

It would be a One World route in which Iberia, Qantas, and even British Airways would code-share on.

It would be interesting to see if it happens...

BTW, I read yesterday at the paper that LAN plans with to satisfy the demand for passengers Asia/South America with these agreements KE/CX; they think it's not likely they would start direct flights to Asia before 2010; there's still not enough demand.

We'll see...
BA: Thanks for the info, It really amazes me that LAN thought of Beirut and Denpasar... never heard of that!

Sorry, I meant pre-war on Iraq.

The idea was brought up in summer 2002.

A thread was made about it:

It would be great if it happens. I don't know what they have in mind for Bali right now though...

Regards
