Will KLM Keep Alitalia?

Tue Mar 14, 2000 9:10 pm

Also in the March 2000 issue of "Airline Business" was an article on KLM, Alitalia and Malpensa airport of Milan.

I Quote :
"KLM Chief Financial Officer Rob Abrahamsen has given alliance partner Alitalia three months to complete its long-planned move from Milan's Linate airport to its new malpensa hub. Should Alitalia fail to meet the deadline, KLM could dissolve the alliance between the two carriers."

Can anyone comment on that or have any inside information about the KLM-Alitalia Alliance.

Happy Flying,

Air France Could Be Interested...

Wed Mar 15, 2000 3:36 am

Hello,

Alitalia would be a great member for the AF-DL-KAL-AM alliance, as they were lokking for another european airline.

Air France and Alitalia are building their fleets approximatly the same way (A32X medium haul and 777-200LR and -300ER for long haul).

France-Italy is (AFAIK) a quite large market where there would be much to cooperate on.

Alitalia has previously dropped Air France because they were state-owned and wasn't a partner they could fully cooperate with. Now that this is ok...

Best regards,

RE: Will KLM Keep Alitalia?

I don't have inside information, but I've heard from some airline analists that this threat isn't to be taken seriously. It's not the first time KLM is threatning to leave an airport if a government doesn't help the airline. I remember the debate which was going on in the Netherlands about the futere of Schiphol Airport. KLM said it would leave the airport if KLM didn't get unlimited acces (or growth potential) to the airport. This didn't happen and KLM still flies from Schiphol.

My advice, don't pay to much attention to a threat from either KLM, Northwest Airlines or Alitalia. It's all a game between the airlines and the authorities. Furthermore, realise that if KLM loses Alitalia, KLM would be getting a lot of problems (as Air France would be glad to pick Alitalia in its alliance and this would create an very strong competitor for KLM).
