Need Info About IAH

Thu Nov 25, 2004 3:49 am

Hello fellow A.nutters,

I am going through IAH on the first of January and it seems like I have to sleep there until continuing my trip to CLL. I guess 45 mins for connecting from UA to CO is too less. Thus my question:

Where can I sleep that night? Can anyone give me information about the hotels at the airport and perhaps about the price range?

Or is it perhaps smarter to rent a car and drive there from CLL of January 1st?

Thanks

Frederik

There is a Airport Marriot Hotel between terminals A and B, and is connected to all terminals by an underground tram. It is pretty reasonable and is pretty nice. Also, I would request a room on the top floors so you can watch the ramp action below. Have a good time in the states.

The Marriott is on site, just take the elevator down to the free subway ,which takes you to the hotel lobby. Should be around $200 or less!!

I would think that you could find something cheaper that's not too far from IAH. I'm not as familiar with the airport/area as the Houstonians are, but $200/night is pretty steep for my budget and I'd try to find something else around there.

If you want to drive from IAH to College Station I think it's a little over an hour - maybe 90-100 miles.

The Comfort Suites Houston Bush Intercontinental is more affordable (about 70 dollars), and they have a free airport shuttle.

Here is a link to the reservations page.

Hope this helps. There may be cheaper hotels near the airport with transportation.

My suggestion to you would be to just drive up to Bryan/College Station. It's under two hours and it would be cheaper to pay for a rental car than to stay at the IAH Marriott. If you drive it, the simplest way is to follow the exit signs for Interstate 45. This will take you to Sam Houston Parkway (Beltway 8) on which you want to travel west. Don't exit for Interstate 45; stay on the Parkway which turns into the Sam Houston Tollway. Stay on the Tollway until you reach U.S. 290 (under 10 miles from I-45); exit for U.S. 290 West towards Austin. Stay on U.S. 290 until just outside of Hempstead, where you exit to Texas 6 North to College Station. The speed limit is 65-70 MPH almost the entire way.

If you havn't already booked the flight, you could fly United to DFW and take AAEagle to CLL.

Of course it would be cheaper either way to fly CO or AA the entire way. However if you are wanting to stick with UA, then this is another option.

First of all thank you for your helpful advice. Now I know all the alternatives I have

@CoTXDFW777AA

Thank you for your warm welcome. I really appreciate that as I will stay in the US for 5 months and I hope the most people are as kind as you are.

@Ejmmsu

I will check the other hotel and compare the prices. However, I have already booked my flight to IAH with UA as a FF reward. So I just have to book the last flight from IAH to CLL.

@ScottB

Your description seems to be very detailed and I think I could really find it with your help. However, I have never driven a car on US highways and I am little bit afraid of getting lost in big Texas. On the other hand it is certainly cheaper than flying, but I love flying. Otherwise I wouldn't be member of A.net.
One question: Do I have to pay in order to use the highways?

Thank you very much.

There are a few toll roads in the Houston Metro area as in other major US cities. However, the interstate highway system for the most part is free. There are also a few toll bridges on otherwise free highways but they are never very expensive. ...with the exception of th Golden Gate in San Francisco which is now up to $5.00 in bound to the city.

Tolls are really not a factor except on the east coast.

Enjoy your stay and welcome.

If you do decide to drive you would only have one toll on Beltway8
before you get to hwy 290. $1.25 in quarters will get ya right through.

If you decide to stay overnight, there are some cheaper alternatives
that the others have show you other than the Marriott.

Enjoy your stay in Texas.
I did not forget...I just misplaced the thought...

Howdy and welcome to Texas! Will you be spending a semester at Texas ATM University?

For more airport hotel information, check out http://iah.houstonairportsystem.org/hotels

This site will provide links to all the area's local hoteliers. If you want to use another travel site like hotels.com, then just search for hotels in the IAH/Greenspoint neighborhoods.

Wow, these are more answers than I had expected.

@Cofaninbos

Yes, I am spending a Semester at TAMU. Many people told me that it is a great place to study. I hope they are right. I will check the airport area for more hotels with the link you provided.

Again: Thanks for your warm welcome all!

ATM is a place one either loves or hates. The haters in Texas like to refer to College Station/Bryan and the ATM campus as "Berlin on the Brazos."

There is also the Sleep Inn also on JFK. Don't know what their regular rate is, but their crew rate is something like $30. Crew rate at the Marriott is $50.

But to get to CLL, I'd just drive.
