JFK-MCO Jblu Interesting Event On Arrival

Sun Nov 28, 2004 1:24 am

Hi there, at the beginning of this year i flew from JFK to MCO on jetblue...

the flight only took 2 hours and 20 mins we had a wikid tailwind...

arriving about 35 mins ahead of schedule in orlando, the captain came on and said there was no where for us to park....so we taxyed behind a jetblue that was parked, and we had air stairs come to the aircraft, we got off onto the tarmac and walked towards the terminal!! They made a quick route for us with the separator tape and had a couple of police officers standing around.
We then walked up the stairs on the airside and passed into the terminal where we would normally be out of the jetway..

im sure this was not a normal procedure, i've never done this before at a us airport, i am not familiar with the ground regs was this legal or at least does anyone think some people would have major issues with it?

It reminded me of my home airport in turkey, we walk out to the A310s and the 737s because it's a small airport....

thoughts?

Aydin,
when you come to the west coast try to go through BUR or SJC and you will experience that again.. To answer your question about regulatory aspect of it, I have no clue !! Big grin

This is perfectly legal. With the CRJs and Dashes we have pax walk on the ramp to airstairs all of the time. In your situation, all they would need is approval from the airport officials and an escort. I've never seen this happen on a larger aircraft before, but it is legal.

yeah good call on the regionals.... you kinda made my question more clear, i forgot to add in about it being a large a/c because in ATL you have to walk to the regionals... i have never experienced this on a larger a/c in the usa..

i wanted to take pics because it was awesome, we have a nicely painted A320 and i was too scared though with the police around and it's probably not looked upon too nicely either...  Smile

It depends on who the escort is.
If I'm working on the ramp, I wont care, I will let people take pictures all they want as long as they stay within the designated walkway. Some people on the other hand have problems with having passengers stop and stand around when out in the AOA.

jetBlue regularly deplanes from the rear stairs as well as using a jetway, so it's not that unusual.

There is nothing abnormal about this. Before jetways were in general use, this was the only way to get from the plane to the terminal. Of course, there is an element of danger to passengers on the ramp and that would be the only issue of concern for the airlines, hence the escorts to the terminal. Since most airports, even small ones, now have the jetways, it is somewhat rare to deplane this way. There should be no restrictions on photos from the ramp aside from the delays it causes getting to the terminal. However I have been in some foreigh countries where they do prohibit photos being taken on the ramp.

Two summers ago, I was on a AF flight from LIS-CDG-LIS with my parents. We were at CDG awaiting departure and we had to switch planes, so they loaded us in a bus and send us over to another AF A320 I believe, it wasn't even at a gate so we got out on the runway basically and used air stairs to board.

I have also experienced problems with not enough gates available due to delays or whatever at FRA and LGW, both times we were bused off the plane to the respected terminals. I have never had it happen in the US before.

This is perfectly normal. I did this once at LAX on an AA flight from SJD to LAX. We were 4 hours late and there was one place for us to park on the wrong side of the TBIT. So we had to walk out into the middle of the tarmac with a BA 744 waiting behind us, really an amazing site, and then the dropped us off behind a Delta 764 that just came in from HNL. We had to walk a good 1000 feet into the custums facility. Let me tell you it was an awesome experience.
