AirTran & XM Radio

Sun Nov 28, 2004 6:20 am

Have any of the 717's or 73G's been outfitted w/ XM Satellite Radio?

If so, are passengers enjoying this and if not, when does FL plan on getting these installed?

Thanks,
Jerion

I did not know that FL was planning on doing this, but is definitely cool that if they are!

So far, one 717 has it installed. Aircraft 778 had the install done about a month ago. The hardware is in place but the system is not functional yet.

One 717 has been outfitted with XM but the system is not yet operable (last I heard anyway). I believe AirTran, as the launch customer for XM, is awaiting FAA certification. Once approved installation in the entire fleet is supposed to be very quick.

Thanks guys!

As am XM radio subsrciber I think it's great FL's doing this.

I wonder if WN will ever add some kind of inflight entertainment. I was on a BDL-LAS flight a few weeks back and if I didn't have my laptop w/ me I'd have gone a little crazy.

Hey Groundstop! When are ships 743 and 744 coming on line? I've seen pics here but I don't think they've been delivered yet.

XM RADIO

The first B-717, # 778. has had the XM Radio package installed. This first installation took 2 days and for future a/c it is planned that the radio installation will be accomplished on a “long overnight” in the new ATL TOC hangar. The Company has full extra sets of seats for the B-717 and these spare seats will be pre-prepared before the a/c comes into the hangar and then swapped out with the seats already on the plane. This rolling seat swap will help bring the XM Radio installation time down to a more acceptable time period.

The B-737 seats engineering design is being worked on right now and it is hoped that soon after the first of the year that the B-737 seats will be outfitted with the XM Radios. The B-737 Recarro seats have not been as easy to do the initial engineering design for.

Rumorboy.....So THATS how they do it? Switch seats overnight....I used to install-uninstall seats at the TWA overbase in the mid/late 60's at MCI.
Thx for the info...

on a side note...with FL taking some of ATA's gates/slots/flights/operations, etc from Midway (Chicago), will they fly some of ATA's original routes....?

For example, I fly ATA every now and then from SFO-MDW..would FL take over that route or would it fly from SFO to Atlanta then I would have to switch planes from Atlanta-MDW?

Currently, 9 aircraft are painted in the new scheme:

73G: 301, 302, 303, 304, 305, 306 (TBD)
717: 742, 743 (TBD), 744 (TBD)

I'm assuming that AirTran will replace some of ATA's larger 738s with it's own smaller 712s and 73Gs on some routes from the very beginning. The 738s will then be moved to some high-density markets from ATL to Florida. The twelve wet-leased 738s will be gradually phased out over six months or so as FL's new jets arrive. Of course, all of this is still tentative.

I was thinking the same thing, too, but apparently it's an FAA certification thing.

Mgmt was a little more optimistic about installing and putting in xm radio than engineering,mx, and the FAA. By the first quarter of 05 all the aircraft should be done. I wish we would have had it done by the holidays. I think it would have been a big hit but I guess that is just the way it goes.
