New Engines For A340?

Wed Mar 15, 2000 8:02 am

There has been considerable debate over the speed and power the A340s possess and many attribute this to the underpowered engines. A couple weeks ago, I noticed some posts which stated that Airbus was thinking of upgrading the engines for the A340s due to customer demand. One person had noted that this decision was made before Sabena's recent airbus order and that their A340s will have the brand new upgraded engines. In addition, I believe the engines were still CFM56's but with a slightly higher thrust rating. I was wondering if this was true and what Airbus is actually doing with the issue... I would love some information please.

The Rolls-Royce Trent 500 will be powering the new A340-500 and A340-600. I heard that they are looking into another Rolls-Royce engine (forgot the model name) to power the A340-200 and A340-300 and as a engine replacement. They are also looking into Pratt & Whitney and General Electric. While the A340-500 and A340-600 are powered by the Rolls-Royce Trent 500, Airbus is looking into other engines to give customers more choices.

While I haven't seen or heard anything else, it was I who posted the message about the possible upgrades. It was information contained in a Flight International article which claimed that Airbus were talking to CFM to upgrade the engines on the current A340 series to allow the aircraft better thrust. No mention at that time was made in regard to RR offering an engine to compete with CFM on the 'classic' A340. Remember due to the sole engine choice, the options available to Airbus for another engine are very limited, ie wing strength, engine placement/shape for maximum efficent airflow etc..
