11/28: EWR Delays--weather?

Mon Nov 29, 2004 11:59 pm

Just wanted to see if anyone on here had a clue re: what happened at EWR yesterday. I was traveling on UA 70 SFO-EWR and we left SFO I think around 12:20p--4 hours late. We had a scheduled departure of 8:30a, and just before 8:00, the monitor changed to inform us of an 11:45 departure. That time was posted for most of the morning. I guess I can't say whether the flight was given a wheels up time right away at 8:00 or whether they got it later and just guessed right on the monitor.

Now I know the weather was bad in the AM in NYC area. Obviously there will be a bottle neck. But how on earth can the JFK flights be leaving on time--no delay at all--while the EWR flights are affected to the tune of 4 hours???!! Is it just the congestion at EWR that makes it sensitive to delay? Is it that JFK can have simultaneous ILS arrivals on 13-31? (do they ever even do that?)

Also some guy in the cab line at EWR mentioned a rumor about a power outage in addition to the weather.

Finally, I will report, after spending all morning at SFO, that for one of the busiest days of the year, it was remarkably civilized. My flight was the only blemish on the UA board--not counting some UAX flights here and there. Bravo everyone (and mother nature).

Well, if you got to see any of the eastcoast NFL football games, the weather was NASTY. Watched the Patriots play in Foxboro (Boston) and it was down right horriable. Cold with steady rainy.

Yeah I heard it was nasty--just curious as to why it seemed to me that only EWR was having that level of difficulty.

One thing I forgot to mention though-- when we landed, it was windy and clear. Quite a nice night actually....heard lots of people around me commenting: "weather?! It's beautiful! Yeah right.... those damn lying airlines".... sometimes I wish we would get a more detailed explanation. Ch. 9 was off.....

EWR area weather was horrible until about 2pm yesterday, with high winds and heavy rain. JFK has runways in all directions which is why their flights aren't affected by the weather.

I went to TEB yesterday and some of the roads around the airport were very badly flooded.

Around 2pm the weather broke and we got blue skies and sunshine for the rest of the day and night.

Yesterday morning, the winds were out of a 130 direction at 20-30kt which put EWR on a rwy 11 operations which isn't good if you want to have things run on time. Using the 4/22s were limited for some takeoffs and when the line of weather moved through, numerous wind shear warnings were given and adhered to, slowing traffic down even further.
LaGuardia was in the same trouble, and at times, due to the wind configuration, it was impacting Teterboro operations to the point where they needed to stop traffic departing from these airports to get another one moving. Just a bad morning.
JFK doesn't have the traffic in the morning to support any major delays and by the time the weather moved through the NY area, the delays were already felt at EWR/LGA, though they improved dramatically throughout the day...
