A new airport being built by the Chinese government in time for the 2008 Beijing Olympics will be the world's biggest and be "truly awesome", according to its British architect, Lord Foster.

I also hear it's going to be "totally rad" and "gnarly to the max". Party on, Lord Foster!

Since when is HKG the largest of anything... other than island airports.

Yes, it's the world's busiest international-cargo airport, but still.

HKG's terminal building is, at current, the largest building in the world. I believe that's what he's referring to, because I don't think architects design things like runways and cargo aprons.

I think largest is meant in context of a single building structure.

Isn't the Boeing production facility where they do final assembly of 747s the largest building in the world by volume?

That's right the facility in Everett is the biggest building in the world in terms of volume, im not to sure what buckfifty means do you mean largest terminal building?

Does the HKG airport need all that terminal space? I would understand a cargo facility being the largest building in the world (HKG is the proverbial Constantinople of modern day trade in the East), but not a passenger terminal, what a colossal waist of money.

HKG: largest single airport terminal.
ORD: busiest airport in the world by movements.
Largest building: depends if you are measuring it by volume. Everett, I agree, although NASA liked to think it was the Vehicle Assembly Building...

Sorry, you're right, it's the largest terminal building in the world.

Not really, the terminal is being utilized at peak times to capacity, and is more efficient than dividing the airport into separate, smaller terminals. The future plan is to build another terminal across on the other end of the island, in the shape of an X. I've heard construction may begin by 2008 or 9, but that's speculative on my part.

I thought that was to be just a concourse, not a terminal.

Is the airport mentioned in the article a new airport or is it a new terminal at the current PEK? I presume it is a new terminal, since they appear to have the space. The current terminal was inadequate for domestic flights even when it opened, about 6 years ago.

I had a six hour wait at PEK between a domestic and international flight (on Sept. 11, 2001, concededly) and there were not enough seats on the landside and United did not start to check in passengers until 2 hours before the flight. There were only a few, overpriced restaurants and shops. The airside has seats, but little else. The best place to wait seemed to be the food court in the basement. I passed through last year and it had not seemed to have changed much.

They have a lot of room for improvement. It is still better than the earlier terminal, which had a real communist train station feel to it, with the lime green tile and thermal water containers.

Isn't DEN the largest airport if you go by land area? What is the largest in combined terminal space? DFW? ORD? ATL when the new international terminal is completed?

The article is unclear if the project involves an entirely new airport on a greenfield site or simply a massive expansion of the existing Beijing-Capital Airport. I recall seeing plans about a year ago for three or four new runways at the existing PEK and a giant terminal complex. All of this would be located to the south of the current PEK facilities.

If that's the case here, in my mind that doesn't constitute an entirely new airport. It's a giant, massive, very impressive expansion, similar to the work being done at Madrid-Barajas. A NEW airport would be akin to Shanghai Pudong or the new Guangzhou - a completely new facility built from scratch on a new site.

Picky, I know...  Smile

Jsnww81,

No its not going to be an entirely NEW airport, rather a new terminal plus a new run way on the existing site of the current Beijing Capital Airport.

The claim "biggest" is something new, however. The Chinese media never mentioned this as of now.

Some background of the new terminal/runway:
1) the new terminal (T3) is supposed to be super efficient: a passenger will only need 4 minutes after checking-in getting to the most remote gate in terminal.
2) Location of T3 will be 1,525m east of current eastern runway, occupying 350,000 sq m.
3) when the new run way and T3 open to public, PEK will be able to handle 60 million pax a year, 2-3m tons of cargo; 500,000-600,000 take-offs and landings per year
4) the new run way will be 3,800m in length, 60m in width;
5) new terminal T3 will have 94 gates, capable of handling A380.
6) still being planned is the transit connection between T3 and T1, T2.
7) everything should be completed by the end of 2007.
8) construction of the terminal has started with 7762 foundation columns poured complete as of Sept 27, 2004.

So when the new terminal is in use, it should put PEK in top 5 worlds busiest airport in terms of pax volume.

I thought that was to be just a concourse, not a terminal.

Semantics, perhaps. I suppose it is merely a concourse, as it won't have it's own dedicated customs and check-in facilities. But the building will almost be as big as the current terminal, which perhaps will make it into the largest concourse ever built.

Go figure.

Are you sure that this project will be done for the games in 2008? For a building and project of this scale, 3 years seems to be limiting. Im not an architect or anything but I know that these big projects can take awhile to put up.

I thought that ATL had surpassed ORD in terms of aircraft movements?

KCmike -

I wouldn't put anything past the Chinese in getting this project done on time. Generally speaking, countries in Asia (Japan notwithstanding) don't get bogged down in public inquiries, environmental impact studies and NIMBY appeasement. When the airport reaches capacity, they build a new one. End of story.

The pace of construction there has been nothing less than amazing. In the 1980s new airports went up in Jakarta, Singapore and Taipei. In the 1990s Osaka, Hiroshima, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Shenzhen and Xian got new airports. This decade, we've already seen new airports in Shanghai and Guangzhou, with Bangkok, Kobe and Nagoya opening next year.

Those of us in North America and Europe should be green with envy. It takes us fifteen years just to get a new terminal or runway approved.

I think the article mean the biggest airport in China.
There has been previous discussion involving the largest airport in the world by area and that title belongs to Riyadh airport but in reality Denver is the largest practically speaking.

As for building airports, HND opened a brand new terminal for ANA up today and two years ago, the land occupying it was a just a hole in the ground.

The new section of the airport at PEK will probably up open in 2007. I was there a couple of weeks ago and they are clearing the site and building the foundations. Even the current facilities are now approaching capacity and its only a few years old!
