NWA A330 Coach Service

Hi all-
Thinking about buying tickets on NWA CDG-DTW-SWF and back. Anyone flown with NWA's A330 yet? Decent movie selection on the PTVs in coach? Legroom? Any input is welcome.

I usually fly CO transatlantic, but tried NW's new A330 from DTW-AMS about two weeks ago. Service was great, free drinks in Y (unlike CO), IFE was excellent with a good choice of movies available on demand (I watched I Robot and Supersize Me) with PTV screens in Y comparable to those on CO. The seat was slightly less comfortable than CO's international Y product...NW doesn't have the Y seats where the seat-cushion slides forwards to simulate greater recline. Overall, though, it was a brilliant flight, and I would fly NW again international any time (In fact I've booked them for my return to EDI after Christmas Holidays, though this time I'll be sampling the DC-10 product from MSP-AMS)

Thanks for the input. I'll make sure I book it so that I'm on an A330 in and out. (Which shouldn't be a problem going CDG-DTW and vice versa.)

If you book on the NW 333, book in the forward Y cabin -- it has power points and a bit more seat pitch.

Yup, forward Y cabin (Premium Seating) has 2 extra inches of pitch. You need to be either elite of high fare customer or lucky to get there Smile Also, if leg room is important then avoid A and J (window seats) because bellow those seats AVOD equipment is stored and one cannot extend legs as much as when sitting in B or H.

I believe they offer about 10 free movies on AVOD (audio video on demand). Even the food is better than it used to be a couple years ago.

I'd think so.

But to be sure you may want to sent an email to NWA http://www.nwa.com/talk/ to find out if CO elites are eligible for Premium Seating on A333 or drop at FlyerTalk.com http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=497 in NW forum. There is a whole bunch of ex CO now NW elites, who will know.

...and it should have been "either elite OR high fare customer OR lucky to get there"

There are pics of their meals on www.airlinemeals.net . I do hope they have improved it as they get very bad reviews and most of their Y class meal service looks inedible.

I generally dislike flying US based carriers across the pond but NW A330 service is an exception I will make. The cabin is great, especially at night. I really like the lighting, very soothing. The video/music/game selection is great. I always like creating my own playlist. The moving map, although a good attempt on NW's part is a bit disappointing (I don't think mine was working right). On my last flight, a teenager across the aisle shoved a pen though the PTV and busted it and the flight attendant said, "Why look at that, cant believe these are cracking already." So, hopefully you wont get seat 44 C on N804NW. I always take the last row window seat, at least you'd get served first during meal service and you don't have to travel far to get to the restroom. Every NW flight I took across the Atlantic featured meal service from the rear forward on both east and westbound flights. FA's were a bit indifferent. Sitting in the back I could hear numerous comments they were making about passengers...very immature. The purser announced we were in Frankfurt just after we touched down in AMS. Two minutes later she apologized and said she's been flying for 44 years and is allowed a slip up occasionally. No offense to her, but I couldn't believe she was still flying. She appeared very frail and from a safety aspect, I'd question her ability to safely get passengers off of the aircraft during an emergency. Beyond that, give the A330 a try. I chose to fly home last month on a DC-10 just because it is a dying breed but I regret that...only one movie in coach across the Atlantic and then a black screen for six hours was really boring. Take the A330. The DC-10 was an experience (awesome deck angle on climbout) but I like the A330 better.

Flew them a couple of times.

Excellent flights, the cabin is unusually quiet and the Avod system provided me lasting entertainment. They even let the system running all the way to the gate.....

First section in coach is fabulous due to the 2 extra inches. I enjoyed it and will choose to fly it again.

In was my impression that they served food from the front to the back on NWA. I always have 12A seat.

Based on what you say I think they serve food from the both ends of Y.

Normally, we have 6 working main cabin, that means two start at the front, two in the middle working aft and two starting from Aft working forward.

Hope that answers that question.

I also recommend you to take the NW A330.

I flew FRA-DTW last summer and it was the best flight I ever had.
Very nice ambiance in the plane, good service and a realy good PTV.

Ok, I have no experiances with the realy good asian carriers but NW330 was much better than AA777.

AeroAussie, you can get premium seating with NW as a CO elite. That's how I managed to get into the front Y cabin on my DTW-AMS flight. If you have your confirmation number, you can select your seat on the NW website.

It should, b/c now that CO has joined w/ Skyteam. If you're Elite on CO, then you have Elite status on Skyteam airlines, including NW. (They were also a codeshare airline before Skyteam)

I know this question does not pertain directly to 330 service, but how is NWA domestic? I am flying DFW-DTW-LGA and back on an 319/320 in the first leg and a 757 on the second. Thanks.

I've never flown them. But I know NONE of NW's domestic flights have IFE. It may not seem big to some, but still, to me I would think a 5 hours transcon flight would seem boring w/o any thing.

I have flown the DTW-SWF leg once before I moved to Madrid.
I live in Poughkeepsie(well in MAD for a year) its a half and hour from SWF.
The service on the CRJ-200 if very nice, the seats where comfortable and the flight attendents where nice. SWF is such an easy airport to fly in and out of. Almost never delays, unless there is an airshow or there is snow.

I hope you enjoy your flight. If you dont end up booking NWA.
FLYI flies to SWF from IAD
American Eagle from Chicago
US Air to PHL
and South East to florida.

Good luck.

You could fly MAD-PHL-SWF, if NWA doesnt work, or IB to ORD and then AA to SWF.

Northwest doesn,t do any 5 hour trans-cons, if you mean east coast to west coast. Good time to read a book.

Rows 22-28 are in the forward cabin, and are available without Elite status. Anything forward of 22, as well as (bulkhead) row 29, require NWA or SkyTeam Elite status. I don't think you can use CO status to choose elite seats online, but you can certainly call NWA and have them put you in 10-21.

I'm flying on a 333 DTW-LGW next Thursday, and I have a forward cabin aisle in Y. I have no elite status (will make Silver on my LGW-DTW return!). On both flights, there are still Y seats in the forward cabin available (only D/E on the outbound, though).

CO and NW's online seat selection recognize each others' elites. I don't know about the other SkyTeam partners, but this was the case even before CO and NW joined SkyTeam. If you're a CO elite booking a flight on NW's website, it won't recognize you when you first book the ticket (when booking, though, be sure to enter your onepass number at the time of booking). You have to pull the itinerary up on NW's website after booking the ticket, then you can assign yourself seating in the premium section of the Y cabin.
