Air Canada To Start YVR-Vietnam

Wed Dec 01, 2004 9:49 am

The CBC Radio is reporting this hour that Air Canada has received permission to start flying to Vietnam from YVR. Service to begin in the spring of 2005.

Would this be via HKG or Japan somewhere? Can't imagine it woulod be direct!...unless they want to do a direct flight to HAN or SGN then onwards to India.

I can see the new service operating via HKG since Air Canada has 5th freedom rights ex HKg which they are not using at the moment.

Hi Airliners.net Junkies!

I assume it would be with a stop in Hong Kong.

Will they be using their A340-500s?

The -500's, I believe, are limited to YYZ-HKG. What is currently flying YVR-HKG? 343?
Next flight.... who knows.

Ummm so AC gets a scheduled license and they are going to FLY there? AC has licenses to many other countries also.

Some are taking leaps of faith on this thread.

I'm with FLYYUL on this. There are other Asian destinations that I could see AC serving before Vietnam. Securing the rights for a route and actually flying it are two different things.

Does this have anything to do with Harmony's intentions to operate the route? Maybe trying to stop the competition before it starts. Though I have my doubts that this route will actually start up. I remember reading here about AC operating YVR-LIM quite a few months ago, and that never materialized.

Well, there are tons of routes that YVR could see..........

But with via HKG to Vietnam, does this mean added daily frequencies or simply extending flight 007?

YVR-LIM? Can't they just use an A321/320 on this route?

Well TPE has been mentioned here a few times
I think NGO (all year round) could potentially make money
GRU? That was brought up a few times

I believe it's actually the CBC that's taking a leap of faith. It's interesting that they had information regarding a start date, although they could very well have been confused with the date on which AC is allowed to start service to Vietnam.

Nevertheless, I see YVR-Vietnam as not a particularly bad idea, at least if United thinks it can make so much money at SGN.

According to the great circle mapper, YVR-LIM is 4397 nm. The range of the A321 is around 2300 nm and the A319/A320 is 2760 nm. They could do it with one stop, maybe MEX?

Personally, I think GRU would work well from YVR. A 762 would be a nice fit for this market.

Good for Air Canada. United's upcoming service is already heavily, heavily booked with cargo and passengers. It's going to be a huge money maker for them. Let's hope the best for Air Canada, too.

UA has a sort of y mini-hub in HKG where flights from ORD and SFO feed its flights to SGN and SIN.
AC's flight from VCR could also be timewise be considered as part of this hub. I don't know if they codeshare onward with UA, but AC could fly onward to Hanoi and they could feed each other very well.
Only the flight from YYZ is so far not timed to fit into an possible HKG hub. But I think it's a nice idea of a mini-hub in HKG with AC and UA.

Maybe AC could base a narrow body in HKG for this flight specifically or for a mini hub of this sort. Haha, imagine getting on an AC 319 HKG to SGN.

NWA does it in Japan, and IB has done it in MIA, AC/UA could certainly do it in HKG. AC may have excess A32X as the EMBs come online...

But so far their A343 from YVR is standing around in HKG from 19:00 to 13:45. So maybe it is saves you the expensive parking fees to extend the flight from HKG and you don't need to base additional narrow bodies.

This will probably start off as a code-share with a Star Alliance partner via an Asian hub.

AC would never position a narrow body aircraft at HKG to facilitate a single route to VietNam. Issues of cost, crewing, etc.

Agreed that if AC is to exercise 5th freedoms, there are a whole list of cities well ahead of points in Vietnam that would come first. BKK would probably top the list, which would ressurect a dormant CP route.

When the press release indicated service to Vietnam, could it be in cooperation with a Star partner. Commercially speaking, AC serves VIE, WAW, SVO, just to name a few.
