Does this have anything to do with Harmony's intentions to operate the route? Maybe trying to stop the competition before it starts. Though I have my doubts that this route will actually start up. I remember reading here about AC operating YVR-LIM quite a few months ago, and that never materialized.

I believe it's actually the CBC that's taking a leap of faith. It's interesting that they had information regarding a start date, although they could very well have been confused with the date on which AC is allowed to start service to Vietnam.
Nevertheless, I see YVR-Vietnam as not a particularly bad idea, at least if United thinks it can make so much money at SGN.
UA has a sort of y mini-hub in HKG where flights from ORD and SFO feed its flights to SGN and SIN.
AC's flight from VCR could also be timewise be considered as part of this hub. I don't know if they codeshare onward with UA, but AC could fly onward to Hanoi and they could feed each other very well.
Only the flight from YYZ is so far not timed to fit into an possible HKG hub. But I think it's a nice idea of a mini-hub in HKG with AC and UA.
But so far their A343 from YVR is standing around in HKG from 19:00 to 13:45. So maybe it is saves you the expensive parking fees to extend the flight from HKG and you don't need to base additional narrow bodies.
AC would never position a narrow body aircraft at HKG to facilitate a single route to VietNam. Issues of cost, crewing, etc.
Agreed that if AC is to exercise 5th freedoms, there are a whole list of cities well ahead of points in Vietnam that would come first. BKK would probably top the list, which would ressurect a dormant CP route.
When the press release indicated service to Vietnam, could it be in cooperation with a Star partner. Commercially speaking, AC serves VIE, WAW, SVO, just to name a few.
