US Airways Gate Info?

Sun Dec 05, 2004 2:39 am

I've been looking for some time as to which gates/terminals US Airways opperates from at LAX, PHL, LGA. I've checked their website, the airport's websites, and travel guides online to no avail. Can anyone help?

LAX: Terminal 1 (Not sure of the exact gates, may alternate w/ WN & HP).

LGA: USAirways Terminal (Self-sustained terminal facility in between the Central Terminal and the DL/NW terminal).

PHL: I'll let someone more familiar with the airport describe this one.

US Airways in PHL operates out of the A-West, B, C, D, and F concourses.

A-West: Serves as US Airways International Gateway. Around 90% (maybe more) of all flights from A-West are US Airways flights. Probably 90% of all US flights from A-West are International Europe and Caribbean service.

B: 100% of gates (B1-B16) are used for mainline US Airways domestic service.

C: 100% of gates (C17-C31) are used for mainline US Airways domestic service.

D: 2 or so gates also US Domestic mainline.

F: 100% of gates (F1-F39) are for US Airways Express flights. Ground Operations for all US Airways Express carriers are handled by wholly-owned subsidiaty Piedmont Airlines employees.

I thought that PHL repossessed (not the right word, but you get the idea) the gates on D. Does US still have a couple?

The map of PIT makes it pretty clear that US has not updated its airport maps lately.

While the airport maps on usairways.com indeed haven't been updated recently, the maps in Attaché magazine are correct and kept up-to-date.

D: 2 or so gates also US Domestic mainline.

PHL's DOA did indeed take back gates D2 & D4 from US. WN is now using these gates in addtion to the 4 gates they have at Terminal E (E8, E9, E10, & E12). The D gates are temporary until either the gate expansion project at Terminal E is completed (WN will then have 8 gates at E) or should US shut down, WN decides to go to for B/C instead.

Also, the B & C gates at PHL are used for international departures as well as A-West. I flew to BGI out of B a few months back. Also, cities that have pre-clearing customs (BDA, NAS) frequently arrive at B&C.

At LAX, as mentioned, US uses 4B, 8, & 12. 8 & 12 are full time US, and 4B is shared with WN. US used to use the entire terminal.

At LGA, US, as also mentioned, has its own terminal. US Airways Express operates from gates 1-6. US Airways operates from gates 7-12 & 15-22. There are no gates 13/14.

ISP-I'm almost certain, actually, that US Airways gates 7-8 are also used by Chautauqua, however, I will check on that.

Just to check on that: 1-8 are Express, however, for the most part, the five Express carriers (Chautauqua, Colgan, Piedmont, PSA, Trans-States) share those gates. 9-12 are mainline gates, and 15 and 16 are occasionally used by mainline planes as well. 17-22 are all Shuttle Gates.

SHUPirate1 - You are right, Chautauqua does indeed use gates 7 & 8, however, these gates do NOT have the permanent stairs pulled up to the jetbridge and mainline flights use these gates as RON's/Fleet Launch departures.

I know that in the past year, the PHL-LGA A321 would always arrive at Gate 8 at night, and would go out as US #1 LGA-PIT the next morning. I myself never knew that Gate 7 was back in the mainline fold until I arrived there last week on a PIT-LGA flight. I checked the US website, and sure enough a LGA-CLT flight went out of Gate 7 the next day. LGA sees the most RON's of any focus city, and thus there is a premium for RON gate space.

Note that even when US was the major player at LGA, gates 1-6 were still always Express. Gates 7 & 8 were Metrojet gates, and have been in "limbo" since MJ went under. With the Express expantion at LGA, those gates were needed for service with Express.

Also, gates 15 & 16 see an equal mix of Shuttle & "regular flying," it isn't just occasional non-Shuttle flying.

As for gates 17-22, those are not exclusive Shuttle gates either. I flew to MSY out of 21 last week, and I frequently see that Caribbean flights (NAS, FPO, BDA, SJU, AUA) go out of those gates as well. To agree with you, however, I've never seen "hub" flying out of those gates (CLT, PIT, PHL, FLL).

ISP-thanks for the correction. I did not realize that gates 7 and 8 were used for mainline operations also. I thought for sure that gates 1-8 were entirely Express. Additionally, to be fair, I've never seen a Shuttle flight use gates 15 or 16 (although when I use the shuttle, it's to fly LGA-DCA and connect in DCA, rather than as O&D traffic). I was not aware, however, that 17-22 were EVER non-Shuttle flights. Thanks for all of the corrections.

One more question though. Correct me if I am wrong, but I have NEVER used Baggage Carousel 3 in use. I know 4 and 5 are used for the Shuttle flights (one for Boston, one for Washington, I forget which), and 1 is used for all Express flights and 2 for all mainline flights. Does Baggage Carousel 3 EVER get used?

Well, I called did some investigating and here is the final result...

Apparantly when I pulled into 7 the other day, it was only because there were extra sections out of LGA and there were no other gates... therefore you were right, 7 is usually only Express.

A quick look at tomorrow's ops, gate 8 is used as mainline LGA-CLT at 7:15, and then the next flight out of 8 is Chautaqua LGA-BUF. So it is a mix.

As far as the shuttle not using 15, USS 2114 LGA-BOS will be going out of 15 at 6:00 tomorrow morning.

As far as 17-22 being non-Shuttle flights, here are a few for tomorrow: 361 CLT 5:30AM will be out of 20, and 739 MSY 7:10 will be out of 21.

Baggage carousel 3 was frequently used when US had 100 mainline flights at LGA, but in recent years is RARELY used.

Here is a rundown of first flights for each gate tomorrow:

Gate 8 - 799 CLT 7:15AM A319
Gate 9 - 91 PHL 7:35AM A321
Gate 10 - 145 CLT 4:55PM B734
Gate 11 - 931 CLT 7:45AM A321
Gate 12 - 771 FLL 7:30AM A319
Gate 15 - 2114 BOS 6:00AM A319
Gate 16 - 701 PIT 6:40AM A319
Gate 17 - 2163 DCA 7:00AM A319
Gate 18 - 2165 DCA 8:00AM A319
Gate 19 - 2161 DCA 6:00AM A319 (this flight has been cancelled)
Gate 20 - 361 CLT 5:30AM A319
Gate 21 - 739 MSY 7:10AM A319
Gate 22 - 2116 BOS 7:00AM A319

Note that gate 10 isn't used until late in the afternoon.

Thanks, good to know...now, I've been trying to match Express carriers with gates, with little success...can you help? I'm pretty sure TransStates uses exclusively gate 1, but I'm struggling to make sense of it otherwise...
