UA To Start ORD-VIE?

Sun Dec 05, 2004 4:42 pm

Articles in travel magazines and other sources rumour that UA is going to start ORD-VIE-ORD by summer schedule 2005. Also VIE airport employees talk about UA to start flying into VIE by summer schedule 2005.
Anyone (maybe someone from UA) having heard the same or even having more information?

Thanks

United is currently reviewing several new international destinations and Vienna is indeed on the list of European cities from ORD and IAD.

Stay tuned!

United's Star Alliance partner, Austrian Airlines, already has a daily IAD to Vienna. It provides great connections to Central and Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Is there enough traffic and cargo to support another daily flight?

Bicoastal: Austrian used to serve ORD, and if I recall correctly the service lasted for a fairly long time. Perhaps with the recent reorganization of the Austrian Airlines Group, UA and OS think they can make a go of the flight once again. The sheer size of the ORD hub means that there is probably enough traffic to fill up a plane, though I wouldn't be surprised if it comes at the expense of IAD-VIE. I agree that Star may be spreading the USA-Austria market a little thin--we'll see.

Just because Austrian currently flies to IAD is no reason why UA cannot assume the route. OS is quite anxious to expand its Central Asia and Far East operations and such a move would free aircraft for just such expansion.
hint hint...

UA is reviewing many new international options, with most being tied into Star Alliance network in someway. Such expansion is certainly safer as it assumes a certain established traffic flow and quicker route profitability.

One of UAs biggest issues with upcoming international expansion is actually a shortage of widebody equipment. You might have noticed more and more domestic routes are and will be flown by smaller narrow bodies as additional 763s and 777s are allocated to international flying especially come the spring.

I don't know how they accomplish taking the 763s and 777s off of their domestic legs. Most, with the exception of flights to Hawaii, are flying hub to hub and are packed with people and freight. Also, these domestic legs are usually combined with an international turn.

Maybe the rumor about Airbus supplying United with Chapter 11 exit financing in return for a big order of 340-600s (747 replacement) will include a few 330s as well?

At one point, the ORD-VIE flight was actually shared between SAS and Austrian--it flew via Copenhagen. And that was before the inception of the Star Alliance.

I think there probably IS enough traffic to support such a flight. If there is enough to support Chicago-Stockholm and Chicago-Copenhagen, I think that Vienna can work.

A service to Vienna would give Chicago nonstop access to even more Star Alliance hubs. (That still leaves Auckland, Madrid, and Seoul, Singapore even though United offers one-stop service to the latter two hubs.)

Wouldn't surprise me to see them start service to VIE, but it seems like UA is covering that part of the world pretty closely...MUC, ZRH, and now potentially VIE.

I would also bet that UA starts service to CPH as well. I've heard conflicting reports about SAS and their international flying, and wonder if maybe UA would operate the SEA-CPH run?

Does SAS currently fly IAD-CPH? I know I have seen an A330 from SAS at Dulles before...mainly as I landed on a KLM 767, but someone on A.Net had written that SAS no longer flies into IAD. Any info would be apprecitaed.

SAS does fly to IAD from CPH. Not sure exactly what is going on, but UA is flying the route for the winter and SAS will pick it up again in a few months. I believe it has something to do with a/c mx, don't quote me on that last part though.

For this winter SAS has a wet-lease agreement with UA. UA operates the flight with an 763 on behalf of SAS. But SAS will be back with theri 333 next summer.
But why shouldn't UA fly IAD-ARN? Star alliance has no flight from ARN to an east coast hub, only to EWR and ORD. So if Star wants to keep them in their system, they should open a flight to IAD or PHL.

Since UA's terminal at UA's largest hub cannot support the A346, I would say that there is very little or no truth to this rumor.

You have to ask yourself what ORD-VIE adds for UA. The answer is that it doesn't add very much in terms of connections. Someone looking to fly DTW-VIE, for example, can fly DTW-FRA-VIE on LH/OS, and most connections available at VIE are already available on LH at MUC and/or FRA. Is the O&D there? That's a differnt question, and the answer may well be yes.

Thanks for the info...last winter SAS was on the route so the wet lease must be new this year.

SAS upgrades IFE on their A333 so until march IAD-CPH is operated by United 763. Too bad - I booked early to fly on SAS  Sad

It seems to me that they would go out of IAD over ORD, because there is less traffic and IAD is United's primary European destination hub, as there are some cities (BRU, MUC, ZRH) that can only be reached via IAD. I would love to see this service come to Washington (and/or Chicago)! I hope that they utilize their power at IAD to expand Europe operations. I also hope that they will eventually bring some Asian flights to IAD (NRT, which NH operates with big success, or KIX or Shanghai). Apparently KE flies to IAD (DC randomly has a huge Korean and Vietnamese population), and with the Federal Government being the largest employer in the area (2.7 million people work for the gov't.*, Pentagon being one of the biggest employers) DC is a very good place for UA to expand to.

* Learned this fact in AP GOV. last week. With 84% of the govt employees living outside of DC, this is why we have such bad traffic (3rd worst in the country)

I'd love to see them start service to VIE this summer, that way I can avoid the current award routing I am holding from PHL- VIE

Why would United spend a billion dollars on a handful of A340-600s when almost ALL of their 747-400s are owned and under 10 years old???

SegmentKing,

They don't own all their 744's, they have even returned some to their lessers. Many of them ARE in fact over 10 years old.

Thank's to all for their input. Well, will see if UA makes it into VIE.
Yes OS was serving ORD with an A310 (already some time ago - cant even remember the year they did). There is quite a large community of emigrated Austrians in the Greater Lakes Area (especially Michigan) so from this side there is a certain demand. Furthermore Austria has strong ties to the car industry (what I know 3 or 4 models of Chrysler cars are produced in Austria for the European market and also for instance all injection nozzels for GM are produced in VIE) - so there is also a huge flow of aircargo forth and back from the greater ORD area including DTW and BUF plus the adjacent Canadian area which is for the moment mostly trucked from JFK to the final destination.

Thanks again

TW741- Could a VIE-DTW-ORD-(DTW-)VIE service have a better shot at success? It seems like you are suggesting a huge money making potential in Michigan, and RJ exploits this with a triangular route at present- I would think that MI O&D and cargo along with ORD connections together could certainly support daily service.

VIE-DTW-ORD or any combination of one hops would not work for trans-atlantic operations - its easier to connect via Europe.

OS A342/332 service was shortlived, and the problem was most likely
the yield, not passenger demand. ORD provides excellent Star connectivity, IAD has the higher paying pax/connectivity...and OS already flies that route.

NWAFA -

Do you have any data to backup this statement "They don't own all their 744's, they have even returned some to their lessers. Many of them ARE in fact over 10 years old."

While United certainly took deliveries as early as 1989 of the 747-400, I can't find any data that says a majority of them are over 10 years old. In fact United ultimately took delivery of nearly 75 747-400, which they are now down to the upper 30's/low 40's.

However, I'm curious if you have a list of all United *current* assets relative to delivery dates of 747-400's?

I rode on N174UA in July (IAD-FRA) and know based on A-net info. that it was delivered to UA in 1/1990.

So there's at least one 744 that's 15 (almost exactly) years old at UA.

>They don't own all their 744's, they have even returned some to their lessers. Many of them ARE in fact over 10 years old.<

As of recently, all their leased 744s are now with their lessors, awaiting new operators (including your employer and Corsair). The ones they own are back in service and have replaced lease-return 772s in some cases. Oh, and 10 years old, that means NW may not be interested because of how young they are  Big thumbs up. Just kidding. An example, however, the 744 in the new colors, N196UA, was delivered on 06/30/1997, 7 1/2 years old.
