Max Weight For Checked Baggage In US?

Sun Dec 05, 2004 9:59 pm

What's the max weight your checked baggage can have when flying economy domestically on AA, CO, UA, US or DL?

Reason I'm asking is that I plan on flying with SAS to either EWR or ORD on a C-class ticket and then continue to MIA, MCO(Orlando?) or FLL with one of the US carriers.

On the SAS flight I can carry up to 40kg but on the US carriers I can only get Y-class tickets so I don't know how much I can carry with them...

It is 50 pounds per piece (20 kg), up to 2 pieces. That is in Y class, so basically the same as SAS

When did they change that? Because I always heard (and read) of the airlines allowing two pieces up to 32 kilos... and, yes, that's for Economy Class.

While I know that some airlines wanted to change that to 2 pieces of 20 kilos, I'm aware of at least one airline that tried (NW/KL) to introduce this change, but officially recalled the decision one or two months ago.

Check the websites of the airlines you plan to use. Those websites will note the total maximum one can have as check in baggage per bag and the total of all bags, the fee schedules for additional bags. On domestic flights, like on CO, the max is 50 pounds (about 22 kgs) per bag, and up to 70 pounds (~32 kgs) with a overweight fee. There are also dimentional size limits on baggage, with fees for items beyond a certain size range, and an absolute limit. There may also be additional fees for sports equipment (skis, snowboards, surfboards).
Some airlines may also limit the total amount one can have as baggage on a flight (even where additional fees paid) on certain high demand flights, at certain times of year (like around Christmas on some international flights).

As far as I always knew, isn't it 23 kg (50 lbs) for domestic and 32 kg (70 lbs) for international? I knew, either way you can have up to 32 kg, I just thought the difference was whether or not you got charged or not. It seems silly if they only allow 23 kg on international flights, when almost every international airline allows up to 32.

Simple, It's 50lbs, 2 free for all domestic except WN(70lbs and 3 free bags) and 70 lbs for international. By the way, rumor is that the 70 on WN is going away soon.

Frank

NW/KL luggage allowance for domestic flights was changed to 50lb from 70lb and it stayed this way since. See http://www.nwa.com/travel/tips/baggage.html#free_lug

The only exception are elites, see http://www.nwa.com/freqfly/elite/benefits.html
Elite members may check a maximum weight of 70 pounds (32 kilograms) and a dimension (length plus width plus height) of 62 inches for domestic and international travel.

While you can exceed your baggage allowance and pay an excess fee, there is one limit which you can't really get around...

In the UK (and for UK carriers) while total baggage allowances may vary, health and saftey regulations limit the maximum weight of a single piece of baggage to 32kg.

They should not accept any bag over this weight due to employee liability ie. somebody will have to lift that bag at some point. And any bag weighing over 20kg will have an additional "heavy" tag attached with the weight written on to pre-warn the baggage handlers.

I believe FL allows a maximum of 3 checked bags, each weighing 70 lbs. or under at no extra charge.

It is 23kg (50 pounds ) for domestic, however I would check with the carrier you are flying with domestically. At the ailine I work for, we will allow you 32kg (70 pounds) if your international sector is/was within 24 hours of your domestic sector. Check with the airline you are with and see if they have a similar policy.
