That's not cool at all. I was actually planning on flying them to Moscow on my annual summer trip next year. I guess not...It's too bad though.

Third time we've announced the route; the third delay/cancellation.

Well, at least we have a perfect batting average on that market!  Big grin

I see a wonderful potential for Continental in this market.
They've got my dollar! One connection, no overnight in JFK!!!
Aeroflot usually goes out packed--and can pull some very respectable yields in the summer--and there is still a sort of brand distrust towards Su.. DL also goes out of JFK, but the general opinion is CO has better trans-atlantic service.. There is also a decent Russian population in New Joyzey, so I definitely see good potential for Continental in this market... Even tho Domedodedovo is not the most popular apt in Moscow right now due to the fact that the bombed Russian jets took off from DME, and even tho there is much less traffic than SVO, it is still further from Central Moscow.

"Even tho Domedodedovo is not the most popular apt in Moscow right now"

Based on what? BA, Swiss, and all the other carriers who have moved from SVO would lead me to believe that it is much more popular than SVO. I've read articles about how much money the private owners have put into facilities, while the corrupt gov't entity at SVO tries to figure out what to do.

I am going to have to agree with TOLtommy here. Continental's choice of DME over SVO reflects the fact that DME is in fact the MORE popular airport in Moscow right now. Loads of money have been invested in DME, hence it has transformed itself into a modern airport, with modern functional facilities, and it has become the airport of choice in Moscow, such that airlines such as BA, LX and EK have all moved their operations there. Indeed, DME takes the cake in Moscow - SVO has got a lot of work to do.

Continental's delay might be a result of SkyTeam cooperation - not to add too much capacity between the NYC-Moscow market. They are probably waiting for demand/fare levels to increase to a level at which all flights can be supported without hurting the other partner airlines.

without hurting the other partner airlines.

You actually believe they would put that much thought/care into that?!

...just curious.

Its a downside of joining a large partnership - United for example will negotiate with OS before starting a route to VIE. You can see many examples where partners will split routes.

For example:
NH pulls out of ORD to let UA be the only Star carrier, while UA will let NH remain the only Star carrier between IAD-NRT. Just my opinion....

Personally, I think CO is just waiting until they free up a widebody or get the 757 with winglets into service. Since HAM and TXL have both been announced as 767 routes, I can see one of them (probably HAM) swaping to a 752W and DME getting the 762 from that route.

I believe CO is slated to use B752 for both HAM and TXL.

My guess: CO decided that the government was unlikely to act soon because of the situation in Ukraine and that a decision any closer to the proposed start date would not give CO enough time to build up reservations and marketing. Thus, it's smart of them to take themselves off the "dormancy" hook that they were trapped by in the EZE case, when they delayed and then lost the EWR-EZE route because of the economic collapse in Argentina.

CO is still telling the government they will be prepared to start the route in a prudent manner whenever it may be awarded.

By the way,in terms of traffic this year DME is treading on SVO's toes because
both are going to carry over 12 mln.pax.(with only a slight difference in favour of SVO).I am assured that DME is more popular than SVO since so many airlines move operations to DME.Next year DME will most probably become the busiest airport in Russia,CIS and Eastern Europe.

Any American carriers flying to DME right now?

The only American carrier right now that is flying scheduled service to Russia is DL and they fly to SVO, so to answer your question, that would be no.

DME is now the world's fastest growing airport.In 2001 annual traffic was at 3.4 mln.pax.In 2002 it went up to 6.7 mln.pax.In 2003 DME had 9.4 mln.pax.
and this year it will most probably be over 12 mln.pax.
