No TSA At Elko

Wed Dec 08, 2004 8:43 am

According to Time Magazine, Elko Regional Airport has applied to have their TSA screeners replaced with private employees, the first airport in the nation to do so. The article also talks about how a new TSA directive, which instructs all screeners to report every minor security indent, and a lot of people are not happy about it.

Do you think the combination of anger over the new directive and Elko's decision to try to get rid of the TSA have a ripple affect and cause other airports to try to privatize their security?

Elko has an airport.........................just kidding

SFO has long been rumored as the first major that wants the TSA out. Haven't heard anything as of late though.

With all the TSA bashing going on, I don't understand what the big deal is and what is the problem with having them around? If the TSA is pulled from an airport, wouldn't it be the airport's and airline's responsibility to hire an outside vendor?

I believe if an airport chooses to pull the TSA the airport/city should be 100% responsible if a person ever boards a flight from that city and commits a terrorist act, as the government was providing a service they opted out of, that would make these cities think twice.

Just because the government is offering a service, it doesn't necessarily mean it is better. I assume Elko Regional would hire security from a reputable security company, not just hire some new workers and train them in security. Elko should only be held responsible if their security was somehow proven inadequate and not effective.

i think that any airport that wishes to 'opt out' of TSA has to supply the new security concern where in the past it was the airline. further...TSA mgt remains and monitors the vendor just as before.
