SQ A380 First Flight?

Wed Dec 08, 2004 12:15 pm

My understanding is that it will be May 2006, with QF and EK getting their first aircraft Sept-Nov 2006.

My guess would be SIN-LHR, although I wouldnt be surprised if they operated into PVG for testing flights, as they operate there 4 times daily.

MTWTFSS 1:20a SIN 2 6:20a PVG SQ 816 Non-stop 773 5:00
MTWTFSS 7:45a SIN 2 12:45p PVG SQ 826 Non-stop 772 5:00
MTWTFSS 10:15a SIN 2 3:15p PVG SQ 806 Non-stop 773 5:00
MTWTFSS 4:55p SIN 2 9:55p PVG SQ 836 Non-stop 773 5:00

Capcity size, combining flights SQ826 and SQ806 with a 9am departure would make sense. VERY low risk scenario.

There is talk at SQ about having the 380 do SIN-HKG until the second aircraft shows up. The first lond distance flight will be SIN-LHR-SIN.

SIN to TYO will be the route proving flights, when a second aircraft is delivered routes to LHR and SYD will be simultaneously launched. That what the SQ Group Australia / New Zealand Corp Sales manager informed us in Setpember when I questioned him.

You can't do SYD-SIN-LHR with 2 aircraft. 2 aircraft are required just for the SIN-LHR-SIN rotation. As far as SIN-NRT for training, that's about a 6+30 leg, not the most ideal length for flight crew training. That's why HKG is the leading station right now.

The eventual rotation will be SYD as well as HKG-SFO and NRT-LAX, in addition to the LHR service. However, if LHR is going to be an all 380 station, then LAX or SFO won't be able to be supported with the current order of 10 aircraft. Most likely LAX would lose the 380 in that case since SQ1/2 are the premier routes.

Phil:
Do you know how management has prioritized the LHR flights if not all three will be operated by the 380? I would imagine at SQ322, which returns as SQ317, would be top priority because that is the only nighttime flight ex-SIN. I suppose SQ320, which returns as SQ321, is second priority because SQ321 is strong, but I imagine SQ will struggle to fill an A380 on SQ320. Same goes for SQ318 (which returns as SQ319).

Ex_SQer,

That was my point! Management has made it clear they will also start the 380 on SQ1/2. So, the plans to serve SYD and LHR simultaneously, with the aircraft on order right now, are a bit far fetched.

However, if SQ gets beyond rights out of SYD that might all change. In reality, since the introduction date is in 2006 a million things can change between now and then.

I have heard roumers about the SQ 380 to CHC, I do not presume it is true as I would imagine in NZ, that AKL would get a A380 before CHC, has anyone else heard this

Quick Question:

Who will have the first ever commercial Flight? SQ or EK?

SQ will likely fly the A380-800 on the SIN-HKG route for a particular reason: testing the upgraded gates at HKG in preparation for the upgrade of the SQ 001/002 route (SIN to SFO via HKG) probably in the summer of 2006. It's small wonder why SFO is one of the few airports that already has gates compatible with the A388 right now, even though it lacks the upper deck jet bridges.

To RayChuang, Philsquares, from where is your information sourced, or is this by opinion.

The information I have is straight from a high position up in SQ. The first revenue service will be to TYO(NRT) only then will LHR and SYD be serviced with the arrival of more aircraft. I was not suggesting that all these flights will be services with A380's at once. Obviously they would need quite a few flights for that. I will expand on my earlier post these are the flights SQ management have sought as IDEAL (note not concrete) in which to start A380's services

for flights
SIN-TYO-SIN (SQ11/SQ12)
SYD-SIN-SYD (SQ222/221)
SIN-LHR-SIN (SQ322/SQ319 and or SQ321)

Nope, sounds like someones smoking something! CHC is a 2 class route only anyway, I doubt AKL will get SQ A380's for sometime either, obviously until they order more aircraft for a start, AKL will I would say get 2 daily 773ER's by 2008ish.

Aussie747,

First of all, the first revenue flight is over a year away. Anything could happen between now and then.

I can assure you my source is even higher than yours, it's in flight ops in the 380 program at a very high level. The reason HKG is ideal is you can give route training to the initial group of pilots who are going to require that. You can get plenty of segments, that equals takeoffs and landings. NRT is just too long for productive training. In addition, since HKG will service the 380 on SQ1/2, it's a good place to iron out any problems.

Again, depending on the the introduction of the 380 on the LHR routes, that will or will not impact SYD. Not that I don't think your source is credible, he does have a vested interest in SYD and I would expect him to fight tooth and nail for the 380. However, in the bigger picture, it's just not going to happen right away.

How many options do SQ have on the 380. With only 10 units ordered, and their route system, they seem to be short on 380 capacity.

6thfreedom:
it would be nice to see SQ doing testing flights to PVG, but combining SQ806 and SQ826 is not a good idea. the reason is the respect inbound flights especially 805 and 825. 825 provides perfect connection to 285 to AKL, 297 to CHC 217 to MEL , while 805 just miss out these flights. i still remember a 23hr wait for connecting AKL flights which wasn't a pleasant experience. 806/805 flights aqre usually more full than 826/825 and SQ wouldn't shift the schedule to 826/825 , other wise flights like 227/228 wouldn't have nice connections. BTW they could theoritically combine inbound 835 and 827 flights if they are keen on PVG
