...more an optical illusion than anything, particularly considering the difference in elevation between spotters/aircraft.

On the other hand, I also love these:

Funny thing is that inside, on long haul flights they seem to get smaller!

Ahh, a loving tribute to my FAVORITE airplane of all time...there will never be another like her - only those that imitate the Grand Dame. And words do not do justice in describing her to someone who's only seen pictures.

Here are some other pictures showing her amazing size:

Okay, I'm a bit biased  Innocent , but every time I see one, I'm still that 7 year old boy at LAX seeing my first Pan Am 747 taking off for somewhere around the world...

there's an incredible pic of a British Airways 744 taking off (or landing) at an airshow and a crowd watching them do so. It's on the photo section somewhere..

I actually just got back from a tour of the SFO mx center. The 744's look MASSIVE on the outside but once you get inside her she's no more than a studio apartment! It's the 773 and A346 when you look down the aisle and see the sheer size of the a/c. I will still say she's the queen of the skies in all appearance. When the A380 comes out I'll still feel this way b/c that's just one ugly duckling but the A380 should rule in the "Mine's Bigger Then Your's" race.

Thanks again.

There's no real optical illusion in Darren's photo other than the zoom compression. At that spot, you get very close to the aircraft and the photo is a reasonable comparison of the height of the spotters to that of the plane, even though it exaggerates the closeness a bit.

Great spot for photograpy, that one.  Smile

Might I remind you that Boeing might not be around if the original 747 project did not succeed. The 747 is magnificant, a sheer beaut of a man made machine. Born in the mid 60's and it is still around and still awe's people to see it. Hawk, Airtrainer, BigBlack, Elcapi, ditto to what you said, and thank you EZY for starting another 747 post.

Just wait until you see the Air Canada Jazz Airbus 380 on the London, Ontario to Hamilton, Ontario route.  Big grin

I also disagree. If there were any optical illusion to be had, the spotters would seem bigger. The closer the spotters are, the more acurate the scale.
