Will US Airways Survive To Become Profitable?

Fri Dec 10, 2004 8:52 am

I know a lot of us have discussed the ability of US Airways to survive, but now some of their officers are saying that they won't be profitable until 2007.

http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/041209/us_airways_bankruptcy_2.html

Sounds like a bad prognosis to me.

If you think there is a chance that US will ever be profitable, I have an airline to sell you.  Big grin

And yet, they were profitable in the 3rd Quarter this year. No matter what you people seem to think, this airline is not going anywhere.

They made it through the failed UA merger, they made it through DCA being closed for 2 months after 9/11, and they are certainly going to make it now. They will never be the biggest of the majors. Any major who doesn't fly over the pacific (US is the only one) isn't on the same playing field. However, they will be around for years to come.

Just a few comments:

1) The ATSB loan covenants state that US Airways must be profitable in 2005. Given the fact that the former CFO stated that US Airways would not be, according to US Airways' own estimations, I would consider it possible that the ATSB might just call in that loan on December 10th, 2004, which would make their existence on December 11th, 2004 highly unlikely.

2) US Airways was not profitable in Q3 2004, in fact, US Airways lost 232 million dollars in Q3 2004. However, in Q2 2004, US Airways did make a 34 million dollar profit.

3) Washington-National was closed for less than a month after September 11th, 2001, not two months as you suggested. National re-opened on October 4th, 2001.

clipper-Thanks for the advice, I'll be certain to take it into account. However, you might want to reread what I said, on two counts:

1) I said they would be likely to dissolve ONLY IF the ATSB called in the loan, which I thought could be possible, although it's obvious that won't happen anytime soon. If the ATSB calls in that loan, let's face it, US Airways is dead.

2) I said the date was December 11th, 2004, not December 10th, 2004

Burnsie-thanks for defending me, and due to your ability to read, welcome to the exclusive club known as my respected users list!

ATLHome -- while your argument centered on "no way in hell" is quite persuasive, do you have any actual explanation for your belief or are you just jumping on the down with US bandwagon?

I landed at PIT this week. What a beautiful airport. What a ghost town.

Very sad indeed.
