Bournemouths New Terminal

Fri Dec 10, 2004 11:32 pm

Does anyone think that Bournemouth will get their new termainal and that flights from southampton will move to BOU. I know that cruise and business flights will stay there but I can see more charter flights coming to Bournemouth.

Bournemouth are being very ambitious, they want to increase passenger numbers from about 90,000 a year to 750,000 with the aim of attracting all of the leisure (charter and cruise flights) from SOU, leaving them to deal with business market. Expansion makes sense, they have a longer runway than SOU and much more land to expand onto, just get it through the planning stage and there should be no problems.

Hello ServiceairKid,

I hope that they seriously think about getting a new terminal, With Thomsonfly and Jet2 coming the airport might not be able to Handel all the flights, Does depend on the times and things.I now that my flight from Bournemouth to malaga (Tomfly) will be at 17.10 and arriving back at Bournemouth at 23.20, Ryanair flights are about that time I think, and I do not know the flight times for Jet2 either yet.

I could always see if I could write to Bournemouth and see if they could give me any information, But I was wondering, where would they build this new terminal? If they built it in the same place, where would the planes be boarded?

As for the SOU flights, I can never see Flybe coming out of Southampton and go to BOU, but I could maybe see the charter flights from there come to here , Britannia (Thomson) and all that, First Choice.

Currently have FR flights departing BOH at 1050 (to DUB), 1225 (to GRO) and 1605 (to PIK). Concerning arrivals, FR flights land at BOH at 1025 (from DUB), 1200 (from GRO) and 1540 (from PIK).

Dan - I will be back in good old Devon on the 21st (flying LPL-DUB-BRS) and leaving again on the 28th (flying NQY-STN-BLK).

Will any new terminal still have a cash point included?  Laugh out loud

GKirk, are you worried that the existing one will be sold to Manston Kent to finance the expansion ?  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

The old terminal is great for spotters/photographers, how will the new one compare.

The old terminal is not that good for spotters now, They closed the outside part a while back now, the only place to see the planes now is through a window from the terminal, though loads and loads of great veiwing places around the airport.

I think that the new terminal will be built north from the current one. I'll find out some time in the new year. I remember a friend saying that the taxiways ways will be moved (possibly). Maybe the shorter runway will be increased to handle more flights. Not that they need it at the mo.

I heard a possible site for the new terminal would be to the south end of the shorter cross runway, this was from an airport employee when I was given a guided tour of the entire airport and tower. I think any plans may be quite a way off coming to fruition but the ATC college is possibly moving within the next few years, supposedly to be closer to the ATC centre at Swanwick, but is only 30 mins away now. Another reason I heard for this move is that the airport want the land which it currently occupies. Nats already have a new technical centre near Swanwick at Whitely which is touted as a possible new college location. This would free up quite a large area for a new terminal to be built, and lets face it, it needs one. If two flights are at the airport at the same time it is on the verge of bursting!

Hi,

Well, sometimes you can get 2 flights at the same time at Bournemouth.

When i fly Palmair there was a Ryanair next to us, and then everything was busy.

There ar 2 runways at Bournemouth but one is no longer EVER used for flights, just the main, longer one, it even has the little flight school planes landing/taking off from there.

With Jet2 and Thomsonfly coming in March, flights will be darbarting at the same sort of times maybe, meaning busy, meaning a mew terminal (Hopefully).

What is public transport like at Bournemouth now? It always used to consist a couple of bus trips a day. Compared to that, Southampton is on a busy train line and is right next to the M27 so as far as access goes.

Is Southamptons short runway really a limiting factor? How short is it?

It's not so much the length. It can handle the 737/757 but also it has very strong crosswinds. This often means alot of diverts into BOU during strong winds.

Southampton is definitely by far the better connected airport to travel infrastructure, Bournemouth has a shocking lack of public transport to it, but previous to Thomson and Jet2 I don't suppose there was ever really a need for it, maybe we'll see some improvements in the new year to coincide with these flights?

Southampton does get fogged in worse than bournemouth sometimes but that situation can also reverse iteself on occasion. Just last week FlyBE operated most flights from Bournemouth one morning. However when Ryanair have to div from BOH they tend to go to Gatwick as opposed to, the much handier for their local passengers, Southampton.

Londoncenter - could it be that Ryanair go to LGW due to its 737-200/800 being performance limited at SOU. Just a thought, i'm not sure if this is accurate.

BOH had a new terminal not that long ago and it's current facilities should see it through the short term traffic increase brought about by the arrival of Thomsonfly. I woiuld imagine that it is far more likely that an expansion of the current terminal would take place before any new one might be built.

Rgds, Jobs
