Memories/ Updates BOS Terminal A

Sat Dec 11, 2004 1:25 am

I remember as a child how grand and magnificent the Eastern Terminal (A) was in Boston. There it stood, separate from all the other terminals. How proud it looked with the huge EASTERN sign in front. We could drive the car right into the terminal and park on the upper floors. The lobby was spacious and light. All 12 jetway gates were close in. And the L1011's graced the terminal with their beauty.

In college, I had a summer job with Bar harbor Airlines (CO/EA express). I loved working at the counter and on the ramp, transferring bags to all terminals on the buggy, but coming back to most elegant one.

Alas, it's apocalyptic. Both this terminal and the WTC came down about the same time, and both are the same architect.

The new terminal going up looks fancy shmancy. I really hope that it still retains a local New England flavor rather than looking like so many of the other new terminals. Does anyone have recent photos of the facility?

I remember riding by that terminal many times with my parents and seeing the Lockeed Electras parked at the gates when one goes up the depatures ramp. Both of my parents, my mother in particular, liked the simplicity of the entry and exit drivingwise; after exiting the main airport roadway, the confusing signage (especially during the '70s) came to an end. I also recall the big picture window opposite the upper level entrance where passengers and non-passengers even post-9/11 could view aircraft taxiing.

I also remember the red-orange neon FLY EASTERN AIRLINES sign that adorned the old hangar which was located just north of the old terminal.

I do remember that when CO moved in, the entire feeling changed. That was the low point of CO, and none of us really liked being associated with them.

It's been a long trip working on that project. I remember walking through it before we closed it to the public and setting up our offices inside the terminal. Watching the CO aircraft pulling in and leaving. Closing it and watching the demolishing of an era. I remember setting up the trailers. Next week we move our stuff out as we will be soon moving the trailers out. I work there everyday as an IT guy for the company rebuilding Terminal A. It's been a great jobsite to work on with a great team. I am excited to see it finished as I have been walking through it through the different stages of the project but I am going to miss the job when it's over. You guys will love the terminal. I have access and have taken hundreds of pictures. I don't know if I can post them. I will find out for you guys.

What point are they at exactly in the construction of the new terminal? It's so difficult to find anything out about this project. Any rumors of late? I know Delta was trying to get out of the deal or something. Is there an expected open date? I've heard Spring 2005 all along. Thanks.

There was a sign in Delta baggage claim earlier this week that said Spring 2005...at this time, I'm scheduled to fly into Boston in early May, and again most likely around Memorial Day, so I am hoping that the terminal is open by then...it looks great on the outside, and I can't wait to get into it (to the point where I am thinking about taking the first flight out of the terminal, if my schedule works out).

The terminal definitely looks great from the outside, I just wish they'd provide more info as to the progress and what's going on inside. Can't wait for that thing to open up.
