It is sad to see Chicago Express drop SPI amd DSM, but it should not be a surprise. As the fat lady has now taken center stage at ATA.

No big deal. Who the hell wants to fly on a Saab from DSM-MDW when they can do UA 737's to ORD anyways.

When did they announce they were backing out of DSM? This is the first I've heard about it.

Actually, Iowaman, lately UA has been flying 752s into DSM once daily to/from DEN and ORD.

Wow... Feel the love...

That little Saab is what has kept UA's 737 price somewhat reasonable. Let's seewhat you have to say 6 months from now when AA/UA duopoly pricing sends ORD-DSM back to the old pricing. Maybe you didn't like the Saab (great little airplane, BTW), but you shoulda tried every now and then.

TOLtommy is right...dsm is notoriously bad for pricing. seriously ATA leaving is bad news for DSM.

Expect many changes at Chicago Express.

Wexford Capital owners of Chautauqua and Republic Airlines placed a bid for Chicago Express on Friday. If the bid gets the courts approval its likely Chicago Express would likely become a UA Express partner.

But isn't Chicago express a division of ATA, kind of like American Eagle being part of American. Or am I totally wrong there. If it is owned by ATA, how difficult would it be for Chautauqua to purchase Chicago Express from ATA?

Dbo861:

ATA is for sale. America West was going to offer to buy the whole thing, but couldn't get a deal they liked.

Others, Airtran and Southwest, are bidding for some parts of ATA, and others are bidding for other parts - such as Wexford and one other company - for Chicago Express.

If Airtran deal wins, then ATA will move to IND, and only fly charters out of MDW. They wouldn't have much need for Chicago Express.

If Southwest wins, then a smaller ATA will stay at MDW - but possibly without Chicago Express.

The point is to get as much money for ATA's creditors as possible. ATA will have to work with what is left.

At this point it is out of ATA's control.

cheers

So, why the heck would Wexford want ATA Connex. and to make them a part of UAX?

So they can give the boot to the Space Shuttle (Shuttle America) and continue the UAX tradition of the revolving door of regional providers and see if they can surpass the record that US set a few years ago when they had 11 airlines operating under the express banner.

PSU.DTW.SCE:

As of Friday night, the Wexford bid was strongly rumored but not confirmed.

One other company - Natel - has made a confirmed bid for Chicago Express. They are a private investment company. I don't know what they would do with it.

There are also rumors that Westjet has bid for some MDW gates.

cheers

Westjet??? Why would they need gates at MDW when they wouldn't be able to fly anywhere but to Canada, or else it would be cabotage. I could see them only needing one gate, but how many places in Canada could they fly that would justify them getting a couple.

Westjet is not looking for gates at MDW. I can tell you that right now for a fact.

Since ATA is leaving DSM and SPI, what are the chances that another LCC will come into either of those markets. I'm not sure about SPI, but I know that DSM has had record numbers of passengers in recent years, and now that Chicago Express is leaving, it might open the doors for say JetBlue to come in when they get their E190s or AirTran or another carrier. Even though either of these airlines might not fly to Chicago as ATA did, I don't think it would make much of a difference as most passengers flew to MDW and made connections.

Wmupilot:

"Westjet is not looking for gates at MDW..."

Tell the Indy Star - they have printed the rumor:

http://www.indystar.com/articles/5/201355-8235-223.html

There were also a lot of people - here - who swore that rumors about SWA offering to code share with ATA couldn't possibly be true, either, because SWA "doesn't code share".

But in the end, that is what exactly SWA offered.

cheers

but I know that DSM has had record numbers of passengers in recent years

Yes, traffic is up 8.7% since last year. I think Jet Blue is a long shot but we can always hope.

jetblue? haha. look for them in chicago, st louis, kansas city, and minneapolis first before even considering to laugh at the notion of coming anywhere near the middle of iowa.

What are the chances that they will connect SPI with IND? I think the chances of that happening are slim but on the other hand, i don't think many expected ata to start GYY service *loL*
