A380 Over Budget By Between $500mn - $1.6billion

Mon Dec 13, 2004 4:16 pm

The CEO of Airbus, Noel Forgeard, has said in an interview with Le Monde that R&D costs for the A380 programme will be between 5% to 15% higher than the original budget of $10.8 billion (i.e somewhere between $500 million & $1.6 billion).

He said that the production price for each plane is in line with budget, so it should just be a one-off higher payment.

The article also confirms that the first test flight will be in March (just 3 months  Smile), two months after the official roll-out on Jan 18 with Tony Blair. Gerhard Schroeder & Jacques Chirac in attendance.

RE: A380 Over Budget By Between $500mn - $1.6billi

From the Bloomberg Story in NYT:

"The chief executive of Airbus, Noel Forgeard, said that development of the new plane could cost as much as 1.5 billion euros ($2 billion) more than the original projected cost of $10.7 billion. His comments, made in an interview printed in Le Monde, were confirmed by Airbus.

Mr. Forgeard's comments come just months before the A380, which has 555 seats and is a third larger than Boeing's 747, is scheduled for its first test flight in March 2005. He said that the cost overrun would have little impact on the profitability of the program and that Airbus still expected to achieve 10 percent operating margins in 2005.

"Concerning the A380, the most important parameter is the production cost for each plane, and for that, we are in line," he said. "On the other hand, it's true that the research and development costs, estimated at $10.7 billion, will be surpassed."

Sounds like more double talk to me. Both the Airbus and Boeing boards should issue their executives muzzles!
