FLL DL Ops Post 2004.12.01

Tue Dec 14, 2004 4:27 am

At first I orignally intended to put this in the trip reports forum, but though that I could make it fit here.

With the new schedule additions that took effect on December 01, 2004 at FLL, they have made gates D6 and D7 in RJ gates, with ramps leading down to the tarmac with three parkings per gate. On Friday night (2004.12.03) when we landed, all six main parkings were in use, and we were parked behind and between two RJs. A few minutes later one left and we took their spot. I also notice there are lines between and behind as like holding spots until a space is cleared.

Now the questions. I know Delta pretty much utilized all their gates all the time. Now, not having the old schedule and new schedule to compare, were the flight schedules with mainline aircraft adjusted to accomodate the net loss of on jetway for the bigger jet? Has this limited space affected on time performances much, for either Mainline or Connection flights? I know there have been several days already this month that has effected ops out of airport that get service from FLL, mainly ATL.

It was great before being able to board RJs through a gate. It will be interesting the effects when those summer-time TS come back next year. Lot of people getting wet, like we do here in TLH when we must board.  Big grin

Well, it appears that DL has addopted banks at FLL.
Chataquaua and DL have 1 arrival around 6am-7am
8-8:50 have 1 and 1
8:50-10:50 has 6 and 4
11-12 has 1 and 2
12-2:50 has 7 and 5
2:50-4 has 0 and 2
4-5 has 4 and 2
5-7 has 0 and 4 plus 1 comair
7-9 has 4 plus 1 comair and 6
There is one more Chataquaua bank, but otherwise thats it as far as overnighting. Also note a couple of Midwest flights in the morning.
But it is obvious that at least Chataquaua has adopted banks on this new schedule (which I can onmy imagine the mess of having 6 flights leave + a Delta to ATL! Anyone who knows gates D6-D9 is probably thinking the same thing)
At least from pre DEC 1, D6 was used for regular ops at night and Chataquaua overnighted 1 or 2 planes on the side of the gate. I like the new RJ additions, just thanking God that we did not lose any mainline for it!

I know that Comair also takes up at least 1 or 2 spaces during each of those blocks as well. Never thought I would say this, but I am kind of debating to start flying into MIA again when I must go. If you catch a flight out of FLL at the wrong time, getting through security at concourse D can be a pain. At least in Miami, getting into the H terminal is quick and painless.

Yeah, I knew that D6 was used almost always for RJ ops, but it was great boarding right from the jetway. Like I had said, it will be interesting what they do as summer approaches and as DL keeps sending more jungle jets to FLL, and them being delayed for wx.

Not sure if anyone noticed this but...since D6 is being used as an RJ gate there is a door between D5 and D6 that is visable from the outside of the terminal that looks like their used to be or was a plan for another gate there. Could Delta maybe add a gate and use 2 gates for RJ purposes only since they would now be so close together? Has anyone else ever seen this door while on perimeter rode or 595?

In the picture above you can see that stairway. I think the only proble with making that a RJ gate is that when you have something parked at D5, after moving all that equipment in front, I don't think there will be room but for one RJ there. That is equipment is still there now, but then you run into the problem about where to put it all...
