Pay Later At America West Question

Tue Dec 14, 2004 11:58 pm

I am looking for my ticket from IND-SEA and saw that America West has this deal where you can get your ticket now and pay later...it sounds good but before i do anything, what is the kicker if any? It just seems that there has to be some kind of catch. Has anyone else done it? any info would be helpful...thanks  Smile

Like most financing schemes, the catch is that America West probably hopes that you don't pay on-time. Then they can begin to charge you high interest rates and late payment fees, thereby recouping even more money in the long term (assuming you don't default entirely). They are offering to be your credit card, except that they will get the interest paymentsd and late fees, not Visa or Mastercard.

CO is doing it now too. They (CO) also let you do an ACH debit from your checking account or pay cash at a Western Union location to pay for your flight.

Downside for buy now pay later is that they run a credit check before they allow this. It will count as an inquiry on your credit report. They can also deny you.

I would have no problem at all paying it off before the time is up...that is no problem.

 Insane

Wrong. HP absolutely has nothing to do with the financing.

From the HP website "If you don’t pay in full by that time, you can opt to pay a portion of the balance and interest charges will apply from the transaction date."

A credit card is not required but you will end up getting a bill just like any other you receive. If you fail to pay you will be charged with late fees and so on. I don't think HP is counting on that as much as just being able to generate additional revenue from another one in a long line of innovations (food for sale on board, first to revise their whole pricing structure, no Saturday night requirement) which other airlines have eventually followed as a result.

The interest is what would kill if one can't pay it on time. By using that i could use the extra money for x-mas gifts and just pay for the ticket before the end of the grace period.

BTW...how is America West? service, etc?

I think the current deal has a 120-day grace period, which is pretty generous. but after that the interest rate is pretty high, over 20% I believe. If you have to use revolving credit to buy your plane ticket than a low interest credit card is a better bet.

If you have the cash now to pay it off in full then it doesn't really matter what you do with it.

Inticing those who want to travel for the holidays but can't afford it right now. They are improving their loads that way.

I'm just curious....how long ago did HP and CO begin this gimmick? Is it because the airline industry is in such dire straits, that they need to pull out all the stops in terms of attracting pax?

It just seems so desperate to me for some reason. Like, "Pllleease fly with us! You won't even have to pay right away!" Crying

The way it works after just talking with an AWA rep., is that the airline gets paid no matter what and then it is the "bank" or credit company that you have to pay to. I think the interest rate is 17.99 percent-obviously advantageous to pay it off before grace period ends.
