Update On IAG (Niagara Falls Int'l)

...They honestly think that they can go from having no scheduled commercial op's, to having 747's??? I understand that it's Niagra Falls, but it's still nowhere near big enough to handle 747 capacity, especially with Toronto being within driving distance.. Complete waste of money..

Well MLI (quad cities, IA/IL) has a 10,000 foot runway. The only runway in northwestern Illinois and eastern Iowa that can handle jumbo jets, and they don't get any except for Air Force One every few years. Just because you have the runway capable for jumbo's doesn't mean they will come land on it, and it definitely doesn't mean that you should build a terminal and facilities to accomodate it, especially with zero scheduled flights....

Even though it sounds far fetched, there is some history involved. Back in the late 1960's - mid 70's, they used to run 747 charter flights from IAG to Europe (Portugal, Madrid, London, Rome, Tel-Aviv, etc..). It wasn't something that happened every week but a few times a year was normal. I know because my parents and grandparents used to occasionally take these flights as part of business conventions they'd go to in Europe. I recall being in the car one time as we dropped them off at IAG and vividly remember a KLM 747 sitting there on a cold snowy night in front of a tiny little terminal building. I thought it was the coolest thing.

What a complete waste of money. For less than $30 million, you could lengthen BUF's main runway to 10,000 feet over the top of the Thruway. It's a fine airport that's already got customs facilities. The only way a region that size could support two passenger airports within 20 miles of each other, would be if one of BUF's low-fare carriers moved there. (Sort of like the way FL uses CAK instead of CLE). But the low-fare carriers all use BUF, and would have no reason to change. BUF's fees aren't high, if I remember right.

IAG is unused for good reason. There isn't demand. I remember the 1970's charters too; my piano teacher took a KLM DC-8 from IAG to AMS. I agree, Dan, that was really cool. But it would be a waste of public money to spend $30 million earned by BUF's success on a terminal that would be used a few times a year. Even a few times a week would not justify the investment.

Niagara Falls is not a major enough tourist destination to justify its own airport, with BUF so close by. Similarly, Rochester's mayor, Admiral Johnson, needs to realize that there isn't sufficient demand for that huge fast ferry boat to Toronto, since DHS won't allow cargo. Let the creditors take it somewhere where it can make money, don't try to buy it.

If I were an Erie County taxpayer, I'd be very upset about this proposal--because I know that NFTA would probably wind up making up the wasted money out of my pocket somehow.

The only thing "Fast" about the Rochester-Toronto ferry was how fast they shut her down!

You nailed it Jim,.....a low cost carrier out of IAG would have been the way to go (before BUF became a low fare hotbed). It's funny, they've been pitching that line about IAG being the "3rd longest runway in NY State" for years. Whoopee! There's plenty of long unused runways all over the USA. I partly agree with sprucing up the airport rather than having it fall into disrepair (seemingly like everything else in Niagara Falls, NY)...but I dont ever see IAG becoming Western NY's version of what Sanford airport is to Orlando. They might be better served to make it into an awesome cargo facility.

I wouldnt say it was unused, I flew a 152 out of there and over the falls a few weeks ago. There is an airbase on the other side where there is heavy KC-10 and C-130 traffic. Also, while I was there, a navy DC-9 (forgive me, cant remember the navy designation) landed and came over to the FBO side of the
airport. It was making the trip from Italy to San Diego. Customs quickly came out to inspect the plane. They let me on board to have a look. Nice guys.

heck for $30 M you might as well offer on heck of a subsidy.....

Its sure not as if BUF is over-capacity.....

And with that length of the current runway, its more than ample to get 757's Trans-Atlantic, 767's, and 777's, should the situation ever arise.
