YOW Spotting

Wed Dec 15, 2004 4:49 am

Does anyone have any suggestions on spotting at YOW? I don't know much about the area, but I probably won't have easy access to a car. Are there any viewing areas or places to view that I can access on foot? If you've got any info, I'd appreciate it!

If you don't have access to a car, the only place that I can think of is inside the terminal on the upper level by the small food coart. There is a window there that over looks the ramp and runway 14-32. If you are taking the bus, route 97 will take you right in front of the door of the stairwell that leads up to the food coart. Hope that helps.

Try the top floor of the parking garage. If you can get a ride of some sort i.e. taxi... ask to be taken to the Highlands Golf Course. You will circle around the runways and will be able to watch the landings and takeoffs. I do it all the time.

A few weeks ago they had a bunch of cars on show inside the terminal too, gives you something to do when you start freezing. But of course nothing beats the view from the tower.  Big grin

Everytime I went there, i think they have cars all the time specialy on the third floor. If you dont' have access to a car, maybe you can go to the huntclub/riverside area(Around the cognos office). its quite far from the terminal building, the action on both runways are clearly visible.

Thanks! It looks like I'll have a car until late that afternoon (after sundown), so I'll be able to venture farther than the terminal to look some runway activity!

If you have a car until late that afternoon like you said, when you're coming back to the airport, instead of taking the route which will lead you to the terminal building, take the exit that will lead you towards the First Air hangar. It's big enough so you won't miss it believe me. They are signs saying that there is no access at the end (it's a dead-end). Ignore it, there's nothing prohibiting you from going. So pass the 7F hangar, and If the wind's coming from the west, park yourself right beside RWY 25. Otherwise, just keep going, and you'll have a view of pretty much the whole airport. Oh, and don't blink, you might miss you're only plane! (It's not that bad actually)

Enjoy,

'Safe.

If you find yourself with a car in the early morning, take Hunt Club road towards Riverside Drive. If the wind is blowing N/S, you'll see some good overhead traffic while waiting forever to cross the bridge! For that matter, you can stop at the gas station at Riverside/Hunt Club, buy a coffee and enjoy the overhead show.
