How To Find Runways Being Used

Hey I was just wondering say you plan on leaving or arriving at an airport, how do you find out what runway you'll be landing or departing at for example lga or jfk

You find out what the winds are going to be (for most airports). Doesn't JFK and LGA use certain runways in the AM then switch them to the other in the PM?
Caution wake turbulence, you are following a heavy jet.

If you have an airband scanner, you can either listen to the Approach, Tower, or ATIS frequencies.

If you are interested for spotting purposes, you can also call up the ATIS from a phone and listen to the recorded message from home and see what runways are in use.
The Airnav directory has ATIS phone numbers listed next to the radio frequencies. http://www.airnav.com/airports/

Is it only weather and traffic that determines runway useage? What about destination?

Yes, destination may be a factor. When you radio into clearance delivery when you are ready to leave but before taxiing, you tell them your intentions such as destination. Then they will give you the details and assign you a runway.
