Air Asia 40 Plane A320 Order Confirmed

Wed Dec 15, 2004 8:58 pm

It's almost official ! Actually this is hardly news anymore, we've grown used to the fact that Airbus wins the big single aisle orders.

Boeing has made a couple of serious, very public gaffes this year. The "we'll have 200 7E7 sales in 2004" and "Air Asia is a must-win battle". Add on the firing of the top sales exec, and you get the impression that there are some serious issues behind the scenes.

"Airbus has sold 124 A320s last month !!"

But at what price. Did Airbus make any money with these orders?

In many discussions in these forums people argue that Airbus is selling it's planes at or below cost.

Well Airbus seem to be making pretty much money so I don't think they give away their planes very often.

And no-one on these boards has ever been able to justify those claims with anything remotely looking like proof. Meanwhile, Airbus is on its way to making a net profit of more than $1 billion this year (looking at the EADS report for the first 9 months). So... who would you rather believe?

Cash is king at the moment, such a deal will result in a lot of cash up front in the form of deposits which will ultimately aid the A350 drive.

Judging by the rates Frontier is paying for the 318/319 aircraft ($88K/95k a month vs the average CRJ-200 at $108K a month) I'm not really surprised.

$35 million? They must be starting to write off sales loses.
