Delta To Chennai, India

Wed Dec 15, 2004 10:46 pm

http://www.chennaionline.com/colnews/newsitem.asp?NEWSID=%7B40378757-3333-4DEA-A037-8BC6F49BDB01%7D&CATEGORYNAME=Business

According to this article, DL will be launching service to Chennai from JFK (via Paris) on May 11th 2005. I don't know a lot about India, but I guess the folks at DL think this service will work. I know Mumbai works well.

Yes. Same for Winter JFK via FRA. They will definitely have these rights for MAA

Would Delta's 767-300ER have any payload restrictions on a route of that length? The former Sabena did MAA-BRU, but not sure whether they deployed the A340 or A330.

Yes, the schedules have been loaded in virtually all CRS except on DL's website. No official press release from Delta yet either.

The departure time from CDG at 1045 would allow a passenger from JFK to arrive on the later DL118 flight and still make the connection. DL118 arrives CDG 0910 and continues to BOM at 1120. On the return to CDG arrival at 0940, decent connections are available to ATL at 1155 and CVG at 1135. The DL119 to JFK leaves at 1035 which is too close a connection I guess.

AF will probably codeshare on this new flight as well.

Why Chennai, and not Delhi?

How does Chennai rank in top Indian destinations? I would have thought Kolkata and Bangalore to be above it as well.

CDG-MAA is marginally shorter than ATL-FCO. The 763ER will be fine for this route.

Tell that to 90% of US Indians who refer to it as Madras. This is intentional on DL's part. DL knows about the Chennai, they know about Bombay/Mumbai. Chennai has just not caught on like Mumbai

Some comments here that I hope will not be deleted by the moderators since it contains information that has not been documented elsewhere as yet.

a) The Delta service will be subject to Government approval. India and the US have reportedly reached tentative agreement on a MOU to the existing bilateral which will grant US carriers access to Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore in exchange for Indian carriers granted access to San Francisco, Washington DC and Houston. The new MOU is expected to be signed in January.

b) As noted on http://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/1860324/ US carriers hold virtually unrestricted fifth-freedom rights into India.

c) There is a significant market for O&D traffic between Paris and Chennai, partly due to the proximity of the former French colony of Pondicherry. Air India has always seen a relatively strong market on this route, going so far as to have operated direct service in the early-mid 1990s.

d) Chennai is the third busiest airport in India for international traffic. Delta will be the 16th carrier operating international flights from Chennai.

e) Air France would not be able to codeshare on this flight unless the India-France air services agreement is modified.

IMHO almost all of the secondary indian markets need more international carriers.
I know that when I am flying YYZ to HYD I want to bypass BOM and DEL at all costs. My current options are limited to QR, EK and LH (Feb '05) so lets hope we see more entrants soon.

That's great ..... new competition .......

But isn't that long from JFK-CDG and then CDG-MAA . well , I don't know how long does it take for direct route from CDG-MAA ,but , I can tell a little of my experience it takes approx. 6 Hours CDG-KWI and then 3-4 Hours from KWI-MAA ......

Anyway it will be nice to see some more competition to our operation chennai.

My regards ,,,,

A step in the right direction towards DL's setting up a hub-type op at CDG. SO far, it's only been the BOM flight that one could connect to... Any idea if DL are planning any more flights (to anywhere) out of CDG?

I don't think that DL is starting a hub type operation at CDG. What it is is that you cannot fly nonstop from the US-India, so if you are going to have to stop, why not stop in Paris, get a few Air France/Delta connections, and pick up some local traffic to fill the continuation!

I presume the local CDG-MAA local traffic will be a small proportion of the total onboards, US O&D's will probably make up 80% of the flight.

Flairport, I don't expect DL to do in France what NW or UA do in Japan, but it would make sense for them if they were to start more routes that required a stop enroute to do them via CDG.

Granted tha the scope is limited, because most of the eastbound destinations can be reached non-stop.

This is really good news...so we now have DL and LH flying daily to MAA from EU and DL the only American carrier to serve Southern India. I guess that the new DL flights might just impact the market share of KU/BA/LH/EK on the MAA-JFK-MAA route provided prices are competitive.

Also from CDG, MAA pax have the option of flying DL transatlantic to JFK-CVG-SLC-ATL and BOS plus on AF codeshared USA flights. Would DL too be allowed to send MAA pax on AF EU operated codeshared flights?

I guess the main target market would be the large Tamil community in USA-Canada. Also do Sri Lankan passport holders need a transit visa for transitting at Indian airports? If not then this flight could be too aimed at taking CMB pax via MAA (CMB-MAA on UL/IC) to CDG and USA.

I do not know where you have this false information from, whether you got it from your local newspaper, a GOI representative or constructed witin your fantasy: Chennai has probably caught up much better than BOM. And may I doubt that the stupid DL reps etc, along with some other people in the environment, might think that they are two separate cities? Big grin

On a side note, Madras was always called Chennai in the local language (tamil) even before they officially renamed it as Chennai for all other languages.

I thought Sabena flew an A340 into MAA. At least they did more than once, because my parents flew the A340 out of and into MAA on them more than once.

p.s: Did some spotting last week at MAA - did get hastled, go figure. Will be happy to post a spotting report if anyone is interested.
I've flown on 9V-SPK.

It's nice to see DL expanding their transatlantic service again. First JFK-Berlin was announced. They already started the second Mumbai flight via FRA and I heard talk of restarting JFK-MAN.

I postponed my visit but was booked on TG, which, for a 4 day notice and high season was more than fair with S$ 1208 (US$ 735.278 ) - slightly cheaper it would have been on their webpage with immediate ticketing

Don't know about the new MAA flights but DL can carry pax. between some European destinations and BOM currently. You can fly DL between AMS and BOM or TXL to BOM or ZRH to BOM via their AF-codeshared CDG flights....

GREAT NEWS!!!!!

I'm in Madras right now and just today vowed to myself to never fly Lufthansa again, because even though the flights are great, they are not customer friendly. Since I live in the Fort Lauderdale area, I have racked up lots of Delta FF mileage. This is great news for me personally.

Yes, I believe they flew to Chennai until the end.

Also, I guess my ability to fly on DL to Madras will depend on how the AF Miami-Paris flight connects to the Paris-Madras flight on Delta. Currently, when I fly LH I have a four hour layover in Frankfurt going to Chennai and returning I spend two hours in Frankfurt. The connections correspond well, and I know many other South Floridians who find the connecting time in FRA convenient. I am sick of LH though and dio fly Delta extensively domestically, so it would be great for me. I vowed today after Lufthansa wouldn't let me change my seats by visiting their ticket office on Anna Salai (They wouldn't let me into the office because they do not want to deal with the public anymore the guard said) that I will not fly them again to Madras unless the only other options force me to go through Mumbai. (I'm even willing to connect in Delhi, but not Mumbai). Hopefully DL has solved this for me!

I agree on the LH attitude - being a UA flyer domestically I will still be stuck with LH for a while. However, I bet this time next year things will be different. WIth BA going 6x weekly and DL going daily - it wont be a quite the stampede to get a seat on LH.

Wonder if DL will use MAA-based Indian f/as for this run like they do on the BOM-CDG-BOM runs. If they do, service on board will be much better. I had some great DL flights between FRA and BOM in the old days with the all-Indian crews - they were always gracious and polite - and on one flight, the OBL even gave me a hand-written note thanking me for flying Delta, etc. The seasonal BOM-FRA-BOM flights this winter have been staffed with NY-based f/as as the flights only run through February 2005.

How much of Jet and the other domestic airlines business involves connecting people arriving in major ports of entry like Bombay to their final destinations? Will western airlines flying directly to southern cities have an impact on them?
