Delta's MD-11s

Sat Mar 18, 2000 6:29 am

How about Delta's MD-11s. My Dad said he read that the MD-11s and MD-90s were potentially going to be phased out since the fleets were small (15 MD-11s I believe) and there arent any more being produced to bolster the fleet. Most of the MD-11s are in the new paint scheme so I thought that might bode better for their future.

They will be phased out but not immediately. Delta needs a lot more 777's before they can dump their MD-11's. However, by 2005 they should be gone. The MD-90's may be gone even sooner.

Since the Delta aircraft have different engines than the ex-AA ones Fed-Ex has, I doubt they'd be interested. It'd be neat if the USAF bought them and converted them to flying tanker/transports, but I think that's unlikely. They'll probably end up as freighters or as the queens of the fleet for a smaller or second-tier airline. (If you could get good prices on them, they'd probably be a sweet deal).

Here's my favorite Delta MD-11 picture.

I heard a rumor that Finnair would be interested in one or two ex AA, DL or SR M11s but I doubt that. Well, it's still a possibility.

The leased MD-11s and MD-90s will be outta here ASAP as too make space for the new aircraft coming in. Right now everything has been put on hold since Delta has a shortage of aircraft with the Boein strike.

FedEx MD11's Pratt & GE

Sat Mar 18, 2000 10:19 am

Not only are the 3 newest MD11F's in the FedEx fleet PW powered, but FedEx has already inked the deal to buy all 19 Swissair MD11's as they come off charge. Think of that fleet by the time all of Swissair's, AA's, and FedEx's MD11's are combined. I read it will total at least 60 MD11F's!!! It will take about 2 seconds for Delta to find a buyer for it's MD11 fleet!!! Don't forget, the Delta MD11's have tremendous range (Atlanta to Tokyo nonstop!!) and actually exceed all of the original specifications set out by McDonnell Douglas.

If the MD-11 is such a great aircraft why are so many airlines retiring them for 777s or A340s? If it has the range for a Tokyo to Atlanta route nonstop, why are airlines getting rid of them? Is it because of it's history of accidents like the Swissair incident in Nova Scotia?
