US Airways At PHL-All Leisure Flights From B-end?

Fri Dec 17, 2004 2:15 am

I was connecting in Philadelphia last night, and as I walked to my flight to West Palm Beach, I happened to come across a revelation...all of the gates in the downstairs (hammerhead) area of the B concourse were going to leisure destinations, namely TPA, MCO, FLL, PBI, LAS, MSY. Are those gates ALWAYS filled with flights to leisure destinations, or is this just pure coincidence that all of those flights to those leisure destinations happened to be leaving the same section of the B-terminal at the same time?

Coincidence. Look at the departure info on phl.org and that will give you the answer. There are flights leaving to DEN, ORD, and CLT leaving from the end of the B Concourse this afternoon. The only correlation may be that the gates at the end are better able to accommodate larger aircraft like the 757.

One reason for that might be that many of those destinations are served by 757s. If I'm not mistaken (and maybe someone can correct me) that those gates are the only ones at B that can handle 757s. I think some of it may have been timing/coincedence, but I think that may be another reason.

US653-May have been true in quite a few of those cases, but Palm Beach sees nothing but 737's (734's from PHL), so that couldn't be it there...best yet, let me give you the flight numbers and equipment I happened to see there (I can't remember all of the gates each were at, and a few are not available on the web for some reason, sorry):

US 893, MCO, 4:45P, 319 (B14)
US 1161, CLT, 5:25P, 757 (the exception, of course)
US 642, LAS, 5:30P, 757
US 25, FLL, 5:45P, 757 (B13)
US 953, PBI, 5:55P, 734 (B16)
US 995, TPA, 6:05P, 757 (B9)
US 1174, MSY, 6:25P, 319 (B14)

Well I'm sure US uses the B hammerhead for more than just 757 traffic. But, I can't think of anywhere else, B, C, or D, where they generally park 757's. You'll see the 757 over in A-West too for Caribbean flights to SXM, STT, etc.

Probably Just A Coincidence...

It is true that the 757's can't fit into the interior gates of B and C and so they always use the hammerheads there...but as for the rest...I chalk it up to random coincidence probably...
