Official KLM MD-11 Appreciation Thread

Sun Dec 19, 2004 1:37 am

WOW! Was looking through some photos, and was struck by how beautiful the new livery goes with this plane. I'm partial to three-holers in general, but something about this combination of colors and shapes is particularly nice. So this is a gratuitous photo-posting thread... Big grin

Only 1 person has posted so far? That's sad...

The KLM MD-11 is one of the best looking MD-11s I've seen, not to mention not too many airlines are flying them!

It is a stunning plane in the KLM colors, however I got to say my all time favorite MD-11 scheme has to be American Airlines. They looked amazing in that livery. Which North American routes do the MD-11s serve this winter?

Cheers

My vote goes for VARIG, which also has the biggest fleet of MD-11 (pax) in the world:

Alitalia and Hardiwv,

Nice pics!

Captain,

AA is a well-suited livery on the plane too I guess. (My last flight on an MD-11 was AA. If I remember back that far, I was actually miserable because the cabin heat was jacked up way too high all night...oh well)

Here's another nice one:

Tks!

What could make the MD-11 more comfortable than the 777? Why only (mainly) RG and KL keep flying with the MD-11 nowadays??

Some how I like the old CI c/s on the MD-11. That black nose with the blue and red cheatline just look extraordinary. Specially the Chinese lettering.

And the KLM MD-11 beauties will be coming to CAI next summer replacing the (boring) 767. They will be the third regular MD-11 operator at CAI after SV and Martinair

I think the MD11 is one of those airplanes that just looks good no matter what kind of paint she wears. I feel very fortunant to get to fly her for a living and I hope to do so for a very long time. Great thread!!!

My last flight with a MD-11 was in KLM: great plane. I think I´m in love with this plane, it´s beauty is imposible to descibe. If KLM would add PTV´s to their MD-11 interior, its imposible to think about a better plane, in better livery, in better airline: the perfect combination.

I've flown the KL MD-11 about 15-20 times. I get to be on board one of KLM's MD-11's almost everyday. The KL 0733 operates to AUA and of course we do the handling.

Last nights KL553 to Cairo was a MD11! There was a technical problem with the scheduled 767-300, so they replaced it with the MD11!

I've been lucky enough to have flown on all of KLM's MD-11s. I love them.. nice huge picture windows, a powerful thrust on take off and beautiful to look at in KLM's blue colours. I hope they stick around for while yet, trijets are getting more and more scarce these days.

NightFlyer you do realise that your job is my ultimate dream lol ? To fly the MD-11 for me would be the pinnacle of my flying career (since Concorde no longer graces our skies). Even just a sim ride would be amazing!

I had the pleasure of 2 flights on board Delta ships N807DE CDG-ATL and N815DE ATL-MCO.I found them to be extremely comfortable from a PAX perspective, and on boarding at CDG we were driven out to the apron and had to board via steps which made it even better lol Its a shame it is no longer economically viable.

I was fortunate to work with MD-11's every night at EGNX, loading and unloading them. There was not a single tech issue during my time there, unlike the ex-ba 757s lol To hear the Gemini/Lufthansa MD-11's power off 27 was the highlight of the night!

Where do KLM send there MD-11's in North America this winter? Im off to LA early next year and would love to ride in one.

Cheers  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

What can one say, you guys have already said it, now that Concorde is retired, the MD11 is the best looking airliner in service. I think I saw a photo of one in Aer Lingus c/s and she was drop-dead gorgeous! (It could have been a DC10)

Captain.md-11,

KLM's MD11s in North America? SFO is a combination of MD11s and 777s. But on some days KLM operates the MD11 into Montreal. I think the Summer schedule will see the MD11 return to Vancouver.

Previously, MD11s were also used on flights to Memphis, Miami, JFK, Newark, Toronto, Minneapolis/St.Paul and long long ago to Calgary.

Agree with the above postings about the MD-11.

N243NW that is actually my desktop background now.

Have only traveled on SR MD-11s, GVA-ZRH, ZRH-LAX, ZRH-ORD and have always loved them.

Must say that the KLM ones look particularly fantastic, especially because of the CF6s as opposed to the PWs.

I have actually flown an MD-11 in the simulator down at Long Beach. Boy was that an amazing expereince...

I remember MD had trouble getting them out the door on time back when the first ones were being delivered. Also they initially did not live up to their expected range and overall performance. I think those two factors kept the MD-11 from being more popular. The technology clock was also ticking as the 777 and other more efficient aircraft were right around the corner. This doen't deminish the MD-11 as an important and still very useful aircraft. USP's new livery is very sharp.

Why basically only RG and KL are the only carriers to have a substantial number of MD-11s?? Are specific reason?? What makes the MD-11 a better option than the 777?

Nowadays i fly LHR-CPH-LHR just for fun on the Varig MD-11

RG also operates AMS-CDG daily with the MD-11 with very good fares (return about EUR160, tax incl). So you have two options for intra-European MD-11 flights: RG AMS-CDG; RG LHR-CPH.
