Former International Airlines At MCO

Sun Dec 19, 2004 8:46 am

On another thread someone was talking about KLM serving MCO years ago, I recall other carriers serving MCO at one time or another too.

Currently MCO has

Virgin- multiple 747-400s and 200s (200s operated by Air Atlanta)
British- 777
Aer Lingus A330
LTU- A332
Condor- 763
Martinair- 763
Aero Mexico- 752, MD-80, 73G
Air Canada- A32X with occassional 762
Air Transat- A320, A310, occ. A332
COPA- 73G
Air Jamaica- A32X
Bahamas Air- Dash-8
CanJet- 735

During the 90s a lot of other carriers served MCO

I had heard Aeroflot, KLM, Air France, Lufthansa, El Al, Saudi and Trans Brasil all served MCO.

Who else and what equipment did they use?

Don't know much in regards to this subject, but I figured I'd chime in anyways. Saudia served MCO via JFK and IAD with a B747-400. Lufthansa, if I recall correctly, used a leased B767-300, non-stop from FRA. That's about all I know, sorry. Hope this helped.

Back when MCO handled charter flights before they went to SFB Monarch would send in their A300-B4-605R, I know because I flew on it in 1993 MAN-BGR-MCO-MAN.

I think some other charter airlines went in there too before they kicked the charters out, maybe Air 2000 and Britannia - I'm not too sure if Airtours (My Travel) ever went there or just went to SFB as I can't remeber when the charters moved.

Yes Britania used to serve here and Monarch, there are pics online of them. I forgot to mention the British charters since they still come to "Orlando" per se, but instead go to SFB.

BA also subs the 777 with a 744 several times a month. Aeroflot flew into MCO? That has got to one heck of a long flight esp. on an airline such as them.

I believe Varig may have served MCO as well. Off topic a bit, but pertenant is the number of US Carriers that once flew internationally from MCO. At one time AA flew MCO-GRU-GIG and also UA flew MCO-MEX for a number of years. During the summer of 1988 Pan Am flew MCO-FRA. From 1989-1991 PA flew MCO-MEX. Delta flew MCO-FRA from 1988 thru 1996 and MCO-ORY in 1992. DL also flew MCO-MEX at one time, and initially looked at offering its Latin American services from MCO and not ATL.

DL operated MCO-ORY because Disney contracted the flight with a 763 for the Euro-Disney opening. Disney promised the flight would make money, but ended up basically buying DL out of the subsidy because there was almost no traffic. Good post though Kkfla737!

I know LAN has served MCO in the past, during southern hemisphere summer season, when economy down here was better. I hope we see LAN some day again at Orlando.

LTU also brought in their L1011's in the early/mid 1990's. I also remember ANA having their own ticket counters at one time also.

Up until recently the MCO website showed ANA as one of the airlines there, but I figured it was a codeshare with United.

In the early 90s, ANA had a codeshare with US Air where US flew paasengers from MCO to IAD and JFK. They were special US Air flights timed specifically for the ANA connection to NRT.

Small British charter airline Excalibur flew there for a very brief period in 1996. Used a leased Skyjet DC10 which was an absolute shed! Was such a fiasco that the whole MCO operation killed the company!

No they don't. All of BA's 744s are based out of Heathrow, not Gatwick.

Aeroflot flew into MCO? That has got to one heck of a long flight esp. on an airline such as them.

It wasn't non-stop.

As mentioned, LAN did fly to Orlando as well. For a very short time in 1999 via Miami.

had heard Aeroflot, KLM, Air France, Lufthansa, El Al, Saudi and Trans Brasil all served MCO.

I had never heard of Air France at MCO, but I did see EL AL here once and the Lufthansa 747 at least twice.. even Iberia twice, DC-10 and 747.

Small British charter airline Excalibur flew there for a very brief period in 1996. Used a leased Skyjet DC10 which was an absolute shed! Was such a fiasco that the whole MCO operation killed the company!

I remember seeing that Skyjet DC-10 at MCO, but I would've never known they were flying for Excalibur!

Britannia flew to MCO then they switched over to SFB to eventually move back to MCO. I remember how MCO was very happy they lured Britannia back. Guess what? Britannia left once again to SFB for good.

Another regular charter in the early 90's I used to see, INTAIR with F-100s.

i lived by MCO for a while and I only seen BA fly the 747-400 in once and that was for that special flight for British Handicap kids going to Disney World. I forgot what it is called, but its like America's "Make a Wish" Foundation. They even have a plane painted up.

I don't think BA has had a regular 744 at MCO since June 02.

Some others that haven't been mentioned about yet:

Air Aruba - Aruba
Mexicana - Cancun
Cayman Airways - Grand Cayman
Aerolineas Argentinas - Buenos Aires

Who wants to venture a guess as to the next Intl carrier to fly into MCO?

I'd like to see AF or LH but with all the airlines code sharing it's not likely...

Wow that's right, I remember Air Aruba at MCO, they used to bring a 767-200 in full colors. Short lived service. I also saw the Aerolineas Argentinas 747 here once; I thought it had been a special flight and not a scheduled service.

Seems as if many airlines gave MCO a try during the 1990s but only for a short period.

BTW If you go to the "live flight information" page on the MCO website, you'll see Cathay, Turkish Airlines, TAM, IBERIA, etc but it doesn't specify they're code share flights.

BA don't sub there 772's with 744's to MCO at all i thought. They do not have any 744's based at LGW anymore and they do not fly to MCO from LHR! MY girlfriends dad works for BA on their 772's at LGW and he has not seen a 744 there for a good 2-3 years!

I've seen a few BA 744s in the past year, don't know if they were subs or charters tho... I remember seeing a 744 along with a 777 in the same day...

Condor (Thomas Cook) also does seasonal FRA-MCO-FRA service. The source I am viewing right now shows it started on 09APR04 and ended on 29OCT04 and was a Friday only flight.

Yeah the LGW flight has been 777's for awhile now, no 747s. We had the BA "Dream Flight" a few months back with 747's from LHR.

Cayman Airways - Grand Cayman

They operated here recently, I didn't notice they had quit MCO.. Maybe they will operate this summer again who knows.

Mexicana - Cancun

Mexicana still flies to MCO on Sat using 757s with increased service during the summer.

LTU also brought in their L1011's in the early/mid 1990's. I also remember ANA having their own ticket counters at one time also.

They are still flying here with the A330-200. You're right, they did have their own ticket counter, I once took a brochure off their counter to see when the ANA aircraft came in.. (it never did -codeshare-)

Condor (Thomas Cook) also does seasonal FRA-MCO-FRA service. The source I am viewing right now shows it started on 09APR04 and ended on 29OCT04 and was a Friday only flight.

lol well, it's not the first service for Condor at MCO either, in the early '90s I saw them here with a DC-10 (probably another short-lived service). The variety at Orlando was amazing wasn't it? Now after so many years Condor is back. I think the flight originates in Frankfurt, then continuing on to San Jose, Costa Rica and back to MCO on the way to FRA. It's like a 2x or 3x weekly flight. The service started about a year after they quit FLL.

Can someone answer my earlier question about the Laker DC-10? Was the airline British or American/what was the route?

BTW this sunday there was a Ryan 734 in Futura colors, does the airline only operate scheduled service to MCO during the summer? (like they did with leased A320s this summer)? ..I think they've flown here quite frequently during the winter in past years, but not this winter.

They flew for a very short time in summer 2004. It was seasonal. With the hurricane damage caused this summer, they currently do not plan to return.

Mexicana has not flown scheduled service to Orlando in nearly four years. They operate charters only.

Can someone answer my earlier question about the Laker DC-10? Was the airline British or American/what was the route?

It was a US airline that operated from the UK to Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami. From MCO, they flew to Gatwick, Manchester, and Preswick.

Ok so let's add "charter" in front of service. Fact is they still fly to Orlando. This past summer there was a mexicana flight Wednesdays and Saturdays. More than once I saw two Mexicana flights on Sat. The only period they've been absent from MCO, not even charters, was 1992-1997.

Someone left off Westjet which operates to YYZ from MCO on a 73G. Do not recall SU operating to MCO, LH,IB were generally diversions from MIA. BA has operated the 744 into MCO many years ago before the base switch for the a/c. Now we get the 777 High Density configuration.
