LH B744 Or SAA A346 To Capetown?

Wed Dec 22, 2004 7:36 am

I´ll have to go to Capetown for business in January.
Me poor chap!
There are two options for me. LH with the B744 and SAA with the A346.

I´d like to have some advice from someone who ideally has flown both.
I like LHs 744s (although I do not know if I can fly business or will be forced into economy), but have never been on board a (flying) A346. So I´m currently thinking to take both, one down there and the other on return as both are in the Star Alliance. Do SAAs A346 have PTV in economy?

IIRC, SAA are not full members of Star as yet and hold observer status. Full membership will be completed during 2005

Ed: Just found a press release from SAA, which may clarify things..

14 December, 2004, JOHANNESBURG: An implementation timetable of immediate benefits for South African Airways (SAA) customers will be released early in the new year allowing them to start enjoying the results of the Star Alliance

Don't the 744 & A346 only go to JNB? It's the LH A343 and SA 342 (non-stop) FRA to CPT, I think...

The LH744 to CPT is only a temporary measure.

I'm out on one LHR-FRA-CPT on the 27th Dec. By the time I come back mid Jan the A343 will have returned to the route.

LH only started flying direct to CPT in Oct; previously flights operating via JNB

Have a good trip which ever route you choose

Isnt the A 346/A 340 SAA Y class product far superior to LHs B 744s/A 340s?

If youre a STAR member and can obtain miles on SAA on ur flight then stick to SAA, however if not then go on LH as theyre 1000s of mileage points to be obtained.

Hi,

go for SAA definitely. Ive been on both, and SAA is far superior. As a Miles and More Member you will get Miles anyway.

And the fact that SAA also has PTVs in Eco is really a Plus.
LH is very tight with its seats and not as friendly concerning service as SAA.

Enjoy CPT, its my favourite city all over the world..

Are you serious? You really consider to fly in LH's Economy Class?  Nuts

Definitely go with SAA both ways. SAA have better seat pitch than LH in Y (who doesn't?...) and they have PTVs, which LH don't. If you are lucky enough to be upfront, SA still has a superior product - they have lie flat seats on all of their A340-600s and I'm not sure if LH has even begun to install the new Business class seats on their 744 fleet yet - even if they have, I would say that there are only a few aircraft with this installed and that your chances of getting the new seats aren't great.
Have a good trip!

I'd go with SAA 346: PTV, and I have never flown the A346 like you. But I have heard LH Buz and First classes are really good. It's a hard choice but I'm sure you'll enjoy iteither way.

Enjoy the flight!!!

If you are flying SA 346, some tips for Y class:

Don't get a bulkheard seat, the advantage of the extra legroom is negated by the airbag in the seatbelt which is extremely uncomfortable and interferes with the table. The same applies for the overwing exit row 45. Best seat in Y is 74D as is has double legroom (there is no 73D). Another good choice might be 37D or 37G as the row in front has only 3 seats in the centre block so there is some extra legroom due to the stagger of the seats.

The IFE is excellent, AVOD throughout the aircraft, wide choice of movies, TV channels, music and games, as well as the outside cameras and the moving map display.

Have a great trip and enjoy Cape Town, I am there right now on holiday, the weather is wonderful!
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

Thank you for your responses so far. When I´ll be forced to fly economy I´ll take SAA. And tell my employer I need a day more rest...

Other considerations are BA and VS via LHR and KLM via AMS. LTU also fly from DUS/MUC and have a premium cabin.
