Firing Of ATC's In 1981

Wed Dec 22, 2004 10:54 am

I came across an article about former President Reagan firing around 10,000 ATC controllers. Anybody know why he did this?

DeltaCVG,

There is a really good article about it here: http://www.buyandhold.com/bh/en/education/history/2001/ronaldreagan.html

Hope that helps!

The controllers illegally went on strike... Reagan gave them 24 hours to return to work, they didn't... they all got canned.

The air-traffic controllers went out on strike, which is illegal for federal employees. So Reagan fired them. They had 48 hours to return to work. If they did not, they lost their jobs. The ATCs in 1981 may have had legitimate grievances, but going out on strike, leaving the control towers unmanned and putting the safety of the flying public in jeopardy was not the answer.

The article was interesting. I was reading "Splash of Colors" by John J. Nance, which is about Braniff (it's a great book, albeit out of print.)

He mentions that when the air traffic controllers were replaced, many of the veteran airline pilots were pleasantly surprised by the friendliness and helpfulness of the new controllers (the ones who were hired to replace the striking workers.)
