First Winter Storm Is Coming!

Wed Dec 22, 2004 12:06 pm

The forecasters are predicting a major winter storm that will move up the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys, causing severe thunderstorms in Georgia and leaving up to 18 inches of snow to the north. Given the path of this storm is will most likely cause a real mess for Delta at ATL and CVG, NW at DTW, CO at CLE, UPS at SDF, DHL at CVG & ILN, US at PIT and ATA at IND. This storm is predicted to start having impact on Wednesday afternoon through Thursday midday. This is terrible timing given all the people trying to travel for the holidays. If things hold as predicted I would expect massive cancellations and delays.

I hope it isn't as bad as predicted so most everyone can safely travel and enjoy the holidays.

Delta is ahead of the game here on their home turf:

Winter weather is expected in the Ohio Valley beginning overnight Thursday, December 23rd. This may result in flight delays and some cancellations.

Please use the Flight Information tool at the bottom of the page to see if your flight has been impacted. To receive updates sent directly to you, please sign up for Flight Notifications.

Rescheduling Flights:
Customers who desire to change their flight as a result of the winter storm December 22nd through December 25th, 2004, confirmed on Delta, Delta Connection®, or Delta-coded flights may make changes without penalty or additional fees if rebooking and traveling by January 12, 2005. Please call Reservations for assistance. See impacted cities below (note: list may not be complete)

BMI - Bloomington, IL

BUF - Buffalo, NY

CAK - Akron/Canton, OH

CLE - Cleveland, OH

CMH - Columbus, OH

CMI - Champaign, IL

CVG - Cincinnati, OH

DAY - Dayton, OH

ERI - Erie, PA

EVV - Evansville, IN

FWA - Ft Wayne, IN

IND - Indianapolis, IN

LEX - Lexington, KY

PDH - Paducah, KY

ROC - Rochester, NY

SBN - South Bend, IN

SDF - Louisville, KY

SYR - Syracuse, NY

TOL - Toledo, OH

YOW - Ottawa, Canada

YUL - Montreal, Canada

YYZ - Toronto, Canada

Does this include people connecting in CVG or CLE, even if their final and initial destination is not listed? Also, its kind of odd that its only through the 25th...lets say a family is going to YYZ for the whole week (I know, why fly to YYZ on DL, but it was the first city I saw!) and wanted to cancel the whole trip...could they only get part of it refunded?

Oh well, let's hope for the best...these winder storms always hit around holidays...good for the people who get to enjoy a white Christmas...bad for the people who have to work around or in the case of ramp people, in it!

It'll be interesting to see where te storm tracks. Local TV in TOL is predicting 1-3 inches to the north of us, really sparing DTW. They are currently predicting 4-6 inches in TOL, 8+ inches just to the south of us in Findlay, which really isn't that far. Should be fun!

They are predicting anywhere from 12 to 18 inches in the CVG area. More to the north of Cincinnati and less to the southeast. It will definately be interesting to watch the track. The one thing they are saying on the weather here in Cincinnati is the colder air, than expected, is moving in so the accumulations may be greater. It is suppose to track pretty much straigh up I-71.

I was suppose to fly to PHL Wednesday morning and return in the evening, but ended postponing the trip so I wouldn't get stuck in PHL and possibly miss the start of the holidays.

yeah LOL... I have done some SCC time!!! I remember once on July 4th they shot fireworks there in a snow storm!!!
Funny thing they just announced on the WX here that Talkeetna is expecting 14 to 34 inches tonight!!!! Talkeetna is just about 50 miles from beautiful Wasilla!!!
Great for the snow machine crowd... !!!
I wonder what some would think of the daily commute from Wasilla to ANC...!!!
65 to 80 mph in the snow and ice!!! I have been passed by a car going sideways!!! Ha!

Okay...since most of the media are morons...here's what i've been getting. From watching the models the last few days...GFS, ETA, MRF, NGM, MM5, and AVN are all starting to agree finally. GFS was the more aggressive and ruled out by most...but I've always found it to be the most reliable. All the models are starting to go with the GFS trends.

So here goes...Ohio wise...low is going to come out of the south and track up to around CAK sit there for a bit and then dart NNE on Thursday. Initially the heavy snow was suppose to run from CVG to CMH to CLE...right along I-71. Right now the models are mixing in a lot of warm air that will mix the snow away in the eastern third of Ohio - there will still be snow...not that much now though. The heavier snow band seems to be getting pushed back to more along I-75 from Monroe, MI (south of DTW) through TOL down to CVG. We'll probably see 6+ around Detroit...more by Lake Huron thanks to a north wind with lake enhancement.

We'll have a band of 10 to 20 running from the Toledo area down through FDY, DAY to CVG. CVG may have some mixing...they are right on the line going by ETA and GFS. That'll knock the snow down there. Expect some early enhancement around Northern ohio...including around TOL...with a ENE/NE wind...something that doesn't happen very often.

Indiana won't get much and anything north of Ann Arbor to Hillsdale, MI line will be pretty dry...maybe an inch or two. Indiana will however get some lake effect around Gary and South Bend...but nothing from this system.

So overall...PIT should be okay for what traffic is left there...and DTW and CVG will be hosed pretty well. Any diversions from DTW expect those to go far north because the primary diversion airport - Toledo - will be snowed in pretty good.

Winds with the system should be below Blizzard criteria...winds won't meet the required speed (35)...but visibility requirements will be there in places.

It'll be fun.  Smile

This is the THIRD storm already for CLE, not the first: we got 10 inches a week ago yesterday (monday), got about another 7 inches on Sunday, and we're looking at 5-6 tomorrow afternoon, 3 to 5 Wednesday night, and another 2 to 4 Thursday morning, also with some freezing rain or sleet maybe mixed in. That's up to 16 inches.

Ho Ho Ho.  Sad

AA has already waived change fees for all flights out of DFW for the next few days. We aren't supposed to get any snow, but I guess cold weather is scary enough for us North Texans!! It was 73 yesterday, and Thursday low is supposed to be near 20.

Of course! There's always that one conspiracy theorist that feels it's the airline getting off on losing money because they can't fly and but making up for it in the sheer joy of inconveniencing thousands of people...all who pay to make the airline run.

You should be, because Thursday morning we're expecting very heavy snow, and a chance of freezing rain or drizzle. There's going to be lots of delays and cancellations in CLE between now and Thursday night.

I head into work in a half hour. If I'm not back by midnight, just call the Ohio National Gurad.  Big grin

Looks like things continue to trend to the west a bit...GFS is taking the RN almost to CLE now. Guess I should go throw some salt down since it won't be much longer for us here in TOL. Of course...with the amount we are getting...it will all be in vain. LOL

Man this storm through north texas really messed things up for AA. About 35% to 45% of our flights were cancelled today and at 4pm they started the much needed company arrival control. It was a new experience that every other person I checked in I had to rebook due to cancelled flights. Oh well, as far as I can tell, the fun is far from over. Good luck to all those gate agents and ticket agents and ramp crews like myself. Days like these is what we get payed the big bucks for.  Big grin

I feel sorry for all of those FedEx and UPS employees as well. Their main hubs are being affected, which is not good with the high volume of shipping going on. With all the guarentees they put in place to get packages delivered before Saturday, they stand to lose a lot of money if air traffic slows too much. This is not good at all. I am glad I am in SEA for the holidays right now instead of back in Indiana where I usually live.

This is effecting all of Delta's system...and here at FLL is no exception.

ATL had a delay as well, effecting arriving flights, but thats just the beginning.

We had a couple of arrivals, MCO, MCo, CMH, BNA, and as at 10:57 ORF which are Chataqaua which were delayed massivly. Their DAY and SDF flights were canceled. the RDU arrival is still on time...but we're talking 2 hour delay on the RDU departure and an hour on the PNS departure...all from gate D6 and D7.

Then, there is this flight...flight 1479...scheduled for a 7:08pm arrival into FLL did not depart CVG until 7:27pm...is estimated to arrive at 11:21pm
It turns around to DL 880 to ATL (the only MD88)...scheduled for 8:40pm...estimated 3 hours late at 11:40pm (and with an 11:21 arrival on DL, we know that ain't happening!)...guess where the flight is leaving from...gate D6! Anyone familiar with FLL's DL Terminal knows how cramped that area is...it's gotta be a nightmare with 2 late departures, 2 late arrivals, 1 on time arrival, and now these two flights (which seat over 100 more than the other flights!)...Delta probably moved it there because the agents were working anyway...why have an extra crew work overtime when you can have just one?

The irony here is that in the time between this departure and 8:40pm, 2 ATL 764s arrive! I'm sure some irate passenger has already said, "well, there is a plane that will go there in the morning...put us on it now!"

Well, here in CLE the snow has been heavy all day and it is yet to let up- about 7+ extra inches has fallen on top of the 5 we already had. We had a ground stop for incoming traffic most of the day but around 8PM I noticed it was lifted. Traffic has been in and out fairly normally and both main runways are open, albeit with fair-poor braking at times. We are, however, expecting more snow and freezing rain through the night so it may mess some things up for the morning connections. I'd say getting out won't be too bad if your plane is already here, but if it's an inbound-- good luck!

The word on the news here in Cincinnati is that CVG is moving about 10 flights per hour. That sounds unreasonably slow, but not too surprising all the same since I can hear the sleet pounding my window and it has been doing that for 6 hours. At that rate, they can work all night and there still won't be any visible progress by tomorrow morning when things kick up again.

So my advice is that if you are traveling, stay the hell out of the Midwest until at least Friday. If you can connect through LHR on you flight from New York to Florida, do it, because it will be faster than the mess that is happening in OH, KY, IN, IL, PA, and TN right now.

Good luck homies.

Air Canada has already cancelled many flight to and out of YYZ for Thursday morning. Westjet, JetsGo and the others have not made that decision yet (you can see the status of all YYZ flights in links below). I am supposed to fly YHZ-YYZ-IND in 10 hours, and things are not looking good in both YYZ and IND. If I do decide to change flight plans, then YHZ-YUL-ORD-IND is my other option, which is not a whole lot better  Sad

Departures at YYZ

Arrivals at YYZ

I remember calling Westjet's call center last February around 5:30 am about the status of my 7:00 am YHZ-YYZ flight during a blizzard (we had 3+ feet of snow) and was told flight was on schedule. My cab driver could not go more than a couple of miles up the highway before turning back. Sure enough all flights were cancelled, and none took off (or landed) for another two days. I hope Westjet makes the right call this time.

Happy Global Warming Holidays! Crappy roller coaster weather is here to stay so get used to it. Here on the East Coast (BWI) in one week we have gone from humid rainy and 60 degrees to single digit temperatures, with snow and back up to the high 50's. Then you guessed correctly if you predicted the same lousy up and down weather. Already, Day has cancelled flights due to the snow. At DFW, they had trouble de-icing. And meanwhile we get to play Dr. Phil to all the snippy surly passengers adversely affected by what Mother Nature has dealt us. They yell, scream and whine why can't we fly the planes anyway? Guess what folks? Unfortunately at this time of the year weather can ruin the best laid plans of mice men and big jets. If these delays are the worst things that happen to you in your lives than you are quite fortunate and should be thanking God. A couple years ago around Christmas when people show off their lousy sides, our BOS flight was delayed. Some guy with that thick New England accent was ranting and raging about why they just cont moouve the wicked snow aff tha ranway?" One of our male flight attendants succinctly told this so called gentleman: "Sir, I don't know about you but being tossed around in a little jet like a Bounce dryer sheet is no picnic or bowl of clam chowder. Now imagine our sage flight attendant stressing this fact and sounding like Jay the Intern on Jay Leno's Tonight Show? These surly loud folks never let out a peep after that.  Big thumbs up
Folks, Christmas and New Years are supposed to be happy joyus times not occasions to belittle and be rude and common and stress out at everyone. That's a faster way to pop a blood vessel or two. We can't fight Mother Nature!

RE: First Winter Storm Is Coming!

Sat Dec 25, 2004 12:45 pm

Picked this up from another forum from a passenger flying United/Jetsgo:

My adventures trying to go ORD-YYZ-YQM (Moncton) yesterday. Unfortunately I am writing this from Toronto!

10:00AM CST - Arrive at O'Hare hoping to standby on 11am flight instead of 1:30pm - no luck
1:30PM CST - 2 hour delay due to Toronto weather - United makes frequent announcements, updates boards
6:00PM EST - Arrive Toronto T2, spend one hour on tarmac, 30 minutes in customs/baggage
7:45PM EST - Arrive at Toronto T3 to find a lineup for Jetsgo check-in that extends half the length of the terminal. No other airline has more than 20 people in line. Most people in line are not actually checking in, but instead desperately trying to rebook cancellations. No one is working the line to prioritize check-in or answer questions and when people finally reach the counter they are simply told to rebook by phone (busy all day).
8:15PM EST - Tempers start to flare and the police are called in as an angry scrum forms around a Jetsgo representative. Global TV cameras film passengers who are extremely upset with a complete lack of information and the prospect of missing Christmas.
8:45PM EST - Someone else flying to YQM goes right to front of the line and is checked-in immediately. Six more of us do the same and get our 9:30pm boarding passes as hundreds continue to wait in line behind. I see a very polite passenger completely berated by Jetsgo staffer who is clearly shell-shocked at this point.
9:30PM EST - Gate change to B22 where two other full flights are also scheduled to depart. No Jetsgo rep is at the gate so a desperate passenger figures out the PA system and pages a Jetsgo representative to applause from the crowd.
10:00PM EST - Board shows another gate change to A5 satellite terminal but again no announcement is made. When we arrive a plane is fueling but there is no Jetsgo rep or information. After 30 minutes rumour circulates that board is wrong, flight is cancelled.
10:30PM EST - Rumour says deicing wait is now 2-3 hours. At least one Jetsgo plane has had to return to refuel after deicing, putting pilots over their legal time limit and causing flight to be cancelled!
11:00PM EST - Head back to original gate C38 (15 minute walk) where one Jetsgo rep is on his personal cell phone trying to get updates. See both passengers and Jetsgo flight attendants crying as they have no idea what is happening. See passenger tear a strip off a Tim Horton's worker who claims it is 'impossible' to toast his bagel.
11:45PM EST - Jetsgo rep tells us Moncton flight is cancelled, must reclaim bags and rebook by phone. Pass two flight crews who have no idea what is happening. Board still shows Moncton at 10:30am from gate A5 and there is no official cancellation announcement. Some other airlines are still taking off.
Midnight - Call parents, have them book me online one-way AC Latitude YYZ-YYG (Charlottetown) Christmas morning for $445+tax = $517. At least I will get out of Toronto! (YYG just as good as YQM since headed to Summerside, PEI to join Mrs. PRS). Baggage area is a zoo with all incoming and cancelled flights in space 1/10th size of new T1 baggage. Airlines have given up on using display boards so no one knows where to find bags. Some people have been the airport since 8am and many people, including small children and elderly, are completely overwhelmed.
1:00AM EST - Desperate passengers discuss driving 17 hours to Maritimes, Hertz says they have no vehicles in entire GTA.
2:30AM EST - Moncton bags arrive after 2.5hrs and I head back upstairs. Line-up is already a mile-long with people wanting to rebook or check-in for morning flights. People sleeping everywhere. Jetsgo rep tells me that YHZ, YQM, YVR, etc. have no space until after Christmas Day, but we must rebook by phone (Montreal available on 24th). Another says we may get out tomorrow but knows nothing about rebooking process. Have yet to meet anyone who has reached Jetsgo reservations by phone.
3:30AM EST - After waiting 30 minutes, catch cab, head home on still treacherous streets, go to sleep! Never so glad to live Toronto
3:30pm Dec 24th - Finally get past busy signal and then spend 85 minutes (!) on hold with Jetsgo before hearing live voice. Agent is courteous but has no available flights to Moncton or Halifax until Dec. 26th. Offers me full refund to credit card (not flight credit) of $222 on my one-way ticket which I accept. Neither rebooking nor refund can be done online.
