Interesting Comments From AirTran's VP About SRQ

Thu Dec 23, 2004 1:10 pm

This was in today's Wichita Eagle:

Low-fare carrier AirTran Airways inaugurated daily nonstop service from Florida's Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport to Atlanta and Baltimore last week, and airline officials are already talking expansion.

Bookings by business travelers have been surprisingly high, Kevin Healy, AirTran's vice president for planning and sales, said.

Business travelers are a good indicator of the economic impact the carrier will have in the area, he said.

"The assumption that it was a leisure market was not necessarily accurate," Healy said. "We're off to a fantastic start."

Daily service to Chicago is to begin Jan. 11.

Sounds like good news to me!

That same assumption is made about DAB. I wish just 1 LCC would come here and give it a shot...I bet they would be happily surprised.

Looks like the MDW service won't be starting.  Sad

By the way,

why would SRQ service be in the Witchita Eagle???

probably an AP story.

SRQ is probably one of the few (if any) non-leisure airports in the state...a ton of big businessmen live in SRQ and travel to meet clients. Very wealthy area.
NEXT FLIGHT: FLL-ATL-HPN on FL

I thought it was odd, but interesting none the less.

I still have my doubts that they will ax the MDW service, there is no official press report on it, and I read before the bid was made that they would operate the new MDW flights regardless of the outcome of the bid

If you try to purchase a FL flight from MDW- to any Flordia dest except MCO you have to connect in ATL.

I just checked the AirTran site. 17th Feb has 3 flights to ATL, 1 to MDW and 1 to BWI. So it looks like they are adding an additional flight to ATL as well.
