Ottumwa Aviation

Thu Dec 23, 2004 4:00 pm

Is there anyone on this forum from Ottumwa,IA? Or close to OTM. Back in their heyday (Ottumwa) They were a booming town/city, economy, and then things took a nose dive. Does anybody remember this? I am looking for some info regarding Ottumwa, and their aviation community.

I wanted to know what size aircraft that flew into OTM, what airlines, and lastly, what connection cities.

I am up in the northern section of Iowa, so I don't know a whole lot but I think UA had EMB-120 service to ORD or maybe it was TW connection to STL. They currently do not have commercial service as they lost a lot of traffic to DSM. I'm sure someone else can provide more info as I'm not very clear on my info.

I know UAL had service to OTM via Burlington, to ORD, with the EMB 1200's. What I really wanted was size of aircraft Ottumwa use to have.

Back in the late 70s, Ozark flew the FH227B.

2 flights a day to Kansas City.
2 flights a day to Cedar Rapids. These flights continued on for Moline/Davenport and finally Chicago-O'Hare. Total time: 2h5m.

Before that in the early 70s, still the FH-227B, Nonstop destinations:
Cedar Rapids 2X (Moline, Sterling/Rock Falls before terminating at O'Hare)
Des Moines 1X
Kansas City 2X
Kirksville 1X (Columbia, St Louis, Decatur)

Before this it was on the DC3. The FH227 was the US built version of the Fokker F-27 Fellowship. Don't believe Ozark operated the DC9 fleet in Ottumwa, as a matter of fact, the city was dropped when the airline transitioned to an all-jet fleet in the early 80s. Sterling/Rock Falls was dropped much earlier.
