Supposed ATC "Hiring Spree"

Sat Dec 25, 2004 3:29 pm

Does any trained ATCS or ATC in waiting think that when the current contract runs out next year, Bush is going to do something that will screw us over?

I'm on the list since I graduted 30 June 2004. I've worked in the ERAU ATC lab with people who graduated in 2003 and still haven't been to training in OKC.

Any current controller know anything more?

Thanks

I doubt its supposed, its going to happen, maybe not exactly the way its been drawn out (you know that congress and budget appropriating thing might get in the way), but bottom line more controllers will be hired.

Seeing they plan on hiring about 12500 new controllers in the next few years, I doubt you will be "screwed over."

435 new hires are already budgeted for next year.
1,249 in 2006.
Varying numbers beyond that through 2014.

Should have been hiring more people all along, we are kinda reaching a shortage in some places, but such is the government.

Good Luck!

Bush isn't gunna do anything, it's just yet another rumor that's floating around. Facilities throughout the nation are gunna be hiring like crazy in the coming years and there's nothing anybody can do about it.

N766UA, I hope to God you are right. I want to get rid of this "waiting period" and all and become an ATCS ASAP.

TheGreatChecko, I totally understand your position, but I've heard so much coming from an aeronautical university. My program coordinator said in July that when FY05 starts, hiring will begin, (FY05 started in October), and no one that I know has been trained.

I know at least 4 people who graduated before Fall 03, who have yet to complete their security clerance and be sent to OKC for training.

ERAU,

I hear ya. Kinda sounds like flight instructors for the period right after 2001. They were well on their way to getting a job, then things changed. Its been a waiting game since then, but things are finally turning around, as will things for you!

We obviously don't do this for the pay (at least in the near term!).....  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Good Luck and Merry Christmas!

If You are no more than 28 years old by the time you finish the needed education and get through a you will still have 1 year to get hired as the maximum age is 30 years and 364 days old to start.

You know RSmith, its funny, a lot of people I know from ERAU transferred from the Aeronautical Science major (pilot) to the Air Traffic Management (ATC) major, because of the money. Even if it is bad to say, I hope a lot of these people don't make it becuase they just wanted to earn 115+ at many places (eg ATL, ORD, New York Tracon (N90), New York Center (ZNY), etc).

A lot of people I helped teach wouldn't know a radar return from their arseholes.

Any idea if the hiring boom will include people off the street or if the FAA is looking strictly at CTI program graduates?

I know a lot of us military controllers are chomping at the bit to get into the big time as well.
Pilots are idots, who at any given moment will attempt to kill themselves or others.

Jjbiv, They probably will.

NBGskygod, I predict you guys will end up in a direct placement program of some sort. If you already have a CTO you could be usable in less than a year in the towers, and quicker than most in the tower/TRACON combined facilities. The age limit is often waived for military controllers with a current facility rating. Keep your ears open
I don't understand everything I don't know about this.

IMHO
They might start hiring next fiscal year (2006). Our contract runs out next year, and there is question about money being available once again ( like the last two years but congress hasn't approved it yet.) There is also the let's contract ATC to the lowest bidder rumor that has been circulating heavily since bush got reelected as well (supposedly this june something is going to happened in regards to that). I feel bad for ya, I was CTI grad from beaver in western Penna. Graduated Dec. 99' and got hired 3 months after that. Whats causing the problem as well with the hiring is that there used to be 9 regions, now this has gone to being only 3. All of the restructuring taking place, a lot of paperwork is filing to one building now instead 3-4. Just be patient. I know thats easier said then done, but you can't rush the FAA. It works at its own speed. Good luck to ya, wish you the best.

The only thing that Bush could possibly do to us controllers is allow the FAA to farm out more of its slower Towers to contract companies as they are alot less expensive to operate. But hopefully, that won't happen.

You have until the end of the month of your 31st birthday to be hired by the FAA or you are SOL.

I don't believe some people who complain that when the FAA announces that they are embarking on a major hiring spree, over 400 this next year and 12,500 in the next 8-10 years, they immediately start complaining about how "Bush" is going to screw them someway out of a job. How is it that anyone is guaranteed any job? Guys there is no guarantee in life. Just ask the hundreds of thousands of airline people who have lost jobs, pensions, benefits, in recent years. Sometimes you have to wait for a good thing. And there are always risks, even with government jobs.
