This isn't an answer to your question, sorry, but on a side note, why are all the airlines still opperating the DC-10s to Hawaii? A lot of airlines, UA, AA, CO, are keepong the DC-10s just for the HNL runs. Whats with that? Is there some reason that HNL gets stuck with all the DC-10s?

I ahev alsways jsut wondered this.

Because Hawaii is a tourist market. They would rather use brand new 777's and 767's to competitive markets with more business travel, like in Europe. Let the ancient 10's stay in tourist markets according to them. I love the 10 as well. If the poster really has his heart set on the flying the 10, he will still be able to for a while. CO will probably leave the 10 going to HNL for another 4 or 5 years. It'll be the last route they'll put the 767 on for the reasons I stated above. Don't know about the others.

UA is still running a few of the old birds out there from ORD, LAX, and SFO. I'll check at work tonight and see how many flights we actually have to HNL w/ DC10's and also which models we are using.

From memory: there's the two ORD flights with DC-10-30's, one SFO flight with a DC-10-10, and one (or maybe none now?) LAX flight with a DC-10-10.

I noticed this, too. Not only with US carriers, but also Canadian Airlines as well out of YVR! Used to be bad news for anyone who didn't like flying the DC-10. My mom hates flying on DC-10s - they make her nervous. My dad once booked a flight out LAX on an ANZ 747-400 just to avoid flying on a CP DC-10 out of YVR. He doesn't feel comfortable on them either. Yet I don't mind them at all. But now CP is quickly getting rid of them, so it'll be mainly 767-300s.

Maybe it's because there are still a few DC-10 pilots who still have several years till retirement! And that they love the Tens! Or it's because they have a larger capacity than the 767-300? Hawaii's a popular vacation hotspot, of course. I seriously doubt it's because airlines are still wary of using 767s or other widebody twinjets over the ocean - dozens of 767s and A330s make regular runs over the Atlantic every day.

Are you sure AA only has 3 dc-10s left, cause last I looked they have like 2 or 3 flights out of DFW on 10s, 1 out of LAX?, 1 out of SFO, and a few out of ORD, or did they cut back on flights out of these place or change the equipment?

Fly Hawaiian!

Mon Mar 20, 2000 4:14 pm

If at all possible, take Hawaiian... they operate DC-10's to the islands, and their service is wonderful!

AA DC-10 Numbers

Tue Mar 21, 2000 3:30 am

Just to set the record straight...

AA has 8 DC-10s of which only 5 are scheduled. Begining in early October, those numbers will drop to 4 total (2 sched 2 spare). Late October...all DC10s are gone!

UA had 2 DC10's from ORD each day to HNL. Flight 43 is a DC10-30 which goes direct, and flight 61 is a DC10-10 which stops in SFO before continuing on to HNL.

Hawaii/ DC10s

Tue Mar 21, 2000 8:00 am

Yes, fly Hawaiian! They operate a sizeable fleet of DC-10s and their service is very good.

Perhaps a reason the majors continue to fly the 10 (aside from the fact that they are very dependable and have the perfect capacity) to Hawaii in particular is maintnenance. If United, Continental and Northwest put thier 10s on the Hawaii routes (to a lesser extent, AA) they can contract maintenance out in Honolulu to perhaps....Hawaiian who also has DC-10s. I dont know if this is the case but I know this reasoning is often behind aircraft positioning and rotation on certain routes. Here in Fairbanks, Alaska both NW and DL operate 757s exclusively into FAI because they contract the maint. out to Alaska Airlines (who's mechanics are trained on 757s) who then only has to worry about one additional type besides the Alaska types.

CannedSpam is right. American has 8 DC-10's left, 3 10's and 5 30's. I don't know about other carriers but I know that American flies then to Honolulu only, from Dallas, Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco. So if you see an American DC-10 in any of the places I mentioned, you can be sure that it comes from or goes to Honolulu. Early 2001, American won't have DC-10's anymore. Now all JFK-LAX and JFK-SFO flights are 767's.
What will American fly to Honolulu? Probably the 767.

A New Choice

Tue Mar 21, 2000 10:58 am

Or, [subject to government approval], you could fly TransPacific Airlines from SAN or PDX to HNL aboard their [proposed] DC-10's.

I know the subject is on DC10 but you folk are forgetting that AA is also flying 757 from LAX and SJC to HNL and I believe UA fly a 757 from LAX or SFO to KOA... and yes AA will most likely switch to 767-300 to serve this market after the DC10 are gone

AA is already planning to switch the SFO-HNL DC10 with a B767-300 in the coming months.

The AA Hawaii DC-10 routes will be replaced with 767-300s. However, contrary to what AACrewChief stated, the SJC-HNL market is still planned to remain on a 757 even when the DC-10s are gone.

YES, They do use 10's out of ORD to HNL. I just got back from Hawaii and my friends flew on AA on a dc10 while I flew NWA on a DC10. NICE AIRPLANE!!!!!
