My guess is it's tape to protect open ports. Looking at the ramp, it's raining so I'm sure they covered over areas that are open due to missing pitot probes, static ports and other open areas.

The red and orangish material is a plastic protective coating. It just keeps the areas clean and scratch free.

Changed a slat on an A300-600 a few weeks ago (big dent through a bird strike). The polished surface came covered with a red oil paper to be removed after installation.
I assume they put a similar protective foil over the radome.
For the small pieces, I think they are tape to cover static ports or holes, where e.g. pitot tubes or other sensors are still to be installed, red to make sure that they wouldn´t be forgotten before flight.

The radome itself is red. Its not tape.

The others are tape, as was mentioned.

It looks as though the radome is black, and is covered in red material. If you look towards the edge of the radome, the red appears to be peeling off, exposing black underneath.

Interesting.Since the Radome was Red,I presumed the Smaller orange patches were some Composite material.
Thanks Gigneal...The Radome has interesting Lightening Diverter stripes too.

Ok, I've already expressed my views on this board regarding the BumbleBee 380 (i.e. The A3-fugly), but I'm waiting to see how it looks in Airbus house colours.........never know...so I'm not going to prejudge until they show the final product (at least on the cosmetic side)..

MD11Engineer,

"where e.g. pitot tubes or other sensors are still to be installed, red to make sure that they wouldn´t be forgotten before flight."

hahaha

Airbus 1: "Toulouse Tower, this is Airbus 1 heavy, we are taxiing out of hangar 10 and are ready to join the queue."

Toulouse Tower: "Airbus 1 heavy, you have been cleared to taxi down kilo to runway 14R. Hold short and await clearance on this frequency."

Airbus 1: "Toulouse Tower, preflight checks are complete, we are standing by for release."

Toulouse Tower: "Good to hear Airbus 1 heavy, at 1 DME turn right 1-8-0, clear for... Standby Airbus 1 heavy, I see you only have 2 engines and there is red tape all over your fuselage. Are you sure you are ready for this maiden flight?"

Airbus 1: "Standby Toulouse Tower, preflight checks didn't mention anything about tape on the skin of the aircraft... perhaps we should return to the hangar. We would like clearance to taxi to hangar 10."

Toulouse Tower: "Request approved."
-----

I don't think the red tape is there so they will "remember" that they are not finished building the aircraft.

It is probably there to keep out the rain. It seems to be rainy/foggy in every picture taken of this aircraft.

The red material on the radome is a plastic protection coating. It will come off during final painting of the aircraft. It is also on the A318/319/321 in HAM during final assembly line. The radomes are actually black on the outside and an aqua color inside.
