Are they fares really good? Any promotional fares?

I just compared with TA fares same route same days and TIKAL is more expensive: GUA-MEX-GU. Dates used: February 3 returning the 6th.

Tikaljets fares are low rates. They have a frequet flyer program called fly all you can. You have to pay a monthly rate and you can fly anyware of there destinations.

TACAA320,

Tikaljets had lower rates than TA, then TA lower the prices for their tickets about 4 months ago, I think this was because Aerohonduras and Tikaljets will start Central America routes. About four months ago almost all Central America tickets where arount 300 to 550 USDollars and know everything is between 99 to 269 USDollars. Also the route to MEX have to be reduce. Another example is the MIA-GUA, in november an uncle bought a ticket to Miami for only 200 USDollars, I also think that they lower the prices because USAirways will start serving almost an identical route FLL-GUA.

All prices are plus taxes

Also I think TikalJets roundtrip fares might be slightly lower but they don't have the same restrictions as TACA. I was in the area two weeks ago and asked TACA for pricing on GUA-SAP and it was $220 either one way or round trip. As I needed to go one way I'd decided to take the bus instead.

I don't have any doubt that your saying the truth. You're right. But with all due respect, the airline industry is a competitive market. More competition, no monopoly, no duopoly, best fares, paxs wins. That"s the best reason for compete in the Central American area [call them Tikal, Copa Airlines]. But I sincerely think, looking back in time, that small LCC usually do won't last long in this area. Hope this will not the case of Tikal. I really mean it.

Yes. You're also right as Juanchito is. But their is no competition in that specific route... I tried to book through CM but they fly to TGU not SAP.

That's the main reason of high fares in the area, NO COMPETITION in some specific routes like this one.

You will see that after "on January 10 or 17" [apparently no SPECIFIC date has being determined yet] rates will changed [even TA ones].

By the way, one of my concerns about Tikal, is how many a/c do they have?

Their web site is not clear at all in this regard. But apparently just ONE DC-9. What happen if that a/c needs urgent service {out of schedule]? Can they substitute for another one? I'm just remember the Aero Costa Rica case just few years ago. Just two B727 (old PA). Now: Gone forever...

Tikal Jets has two DC-9-51's and a DC-9-32 in their fleet with a third DC-9-51 under consideration for mid 2005 if they finally get permits to fly to SAL and plan to start SJO afterwards(late 2005). Of course they might have problems with a small fleet, but with good, fares and smart scheduling they might increase demand in some intra Central American routes that need options.

TACAA320,
I really hope that Tikal Jets could be a bigger airline and more competitive in more routes to and from Central America. As you said they will have to battle a lot in a small region.

I don't know how old the fleet is just know that the two DC-9-51 came from Finnair and the DC-9-32 from Aeromexio. I know they have defenetly an old fleet compare two Taca and Copa, could they buy or lease newer planes?

Regarding your question, I don't think so by the moment.

Otherwise they got them from the very beginning.

I just double checked fares between Tikal and TA. Another example: flying between GUA and BZE [roundtrip] on Feb, 28 comming back Mar 3, 2005.

TIKAL: US$149,00
TACA : US$145,00

[Both PLUS taxes]

My concern about this point is, how Tikal pretend to be more attractive than others, if they charge you more?

Four more dollars, and you can travel between GUA and BZE without changing planes is not bad. The small airlines have to look at better flight times and reliable service if they plan to compete with TACA and COPA in the long run. And don´t forget the big ones have the advantage of their frequent flyer programs.

Yes ONLY four more bucks. In the specific case of that route the only benefit I personally see is the direct flight of Tikal, versus the stop over in SAL with TA.

But is the same case between GUA-MEX. TA is ALSO just a few dollars cheaper than Tikal. Both flying non stop. Another difference to consider is the a/c. If you put me to choose an old DC-9 (that nobody knows how really old are they, but I bet no less than 15 years) versus brand new A320s, I prefer the last one. Frequencies is another important point.TA has more frequencies than Tikal.

I want to be "VERY CLEAR" about the following [trying to be realistic].

This is a personal opinion.
I like competition.
I promote competition.
I DON'T have ANYTHING against Tikal.

But as I said sometime before, looking back in Central American Aviation History, many of these small carriers are "flor de un dia". Why? Bad management, old fleets, late departures, late arrivals [ pls. take a brief look at the second pic of TG-URY to the right, on "remarks"], cancellations, etc.

I really hope, that Tikal will live longer. And I really mean it. But I also don't want to say to ANYBODY in future, I told you...

Cheers and a Happy 2005.

TACAA320: I agree with you and as I say in my last post "The small airlines have to look at better flight times and reliable service if they plan to compete with TACA and COPA " Lets hope that in a not too distant future the are able to lease or buy MD-80's or 737-300's at least and then A-319/320's or 737G´s or EMBRAERS lets hope, competition is good for our region, for tourism, for businessmen and good for the big airlines who have been forced to become more efficient.

I share your hope. The Embraers seems to be more logical for me, due to the short haul routes they have by the moment. But only time will say.

Best wishes and good luck my friend.

Sorry, forget something.

Why not a leased A318? That will be really NICE to see in Central America. Don't you think so? But with the benefit of more advance technology than a DC-9, obviously!  Smile

___________________________________________________________-

TACAA320, it's not that they are charging more, it's that TACA is dumping their prices because the first aproach it has has is a protective aproach (as expected).

As for their a/c I PERSONALLY like better their DC-9 that TA chickenbuses; oh and WU doesn't lease, they buy and they havent had any cancellations.

But in the end the new destinations are welcomed to GUA's flag carrier since Aviateca has been dead.

Indeed, people comparing WU and TA's pricing have to remember what the pricing was or would be without WU. A few years ago, MEX-GUA r/t was like $550 and now it's around $200. They both will try to differentiate. I flew on them a few times, on the 1-11 in 2001 and last month on the DC-9, and I sort of like them. I will write a trip report asap  Wink/being sarcastic
The good thing of their DC-9 (and former BAC 1-11) is the aircraft is paid for, they know how to maintain it, and it's not costing lease or depreciation fees if the aircraft is parked during a slow early afternoon. A DC-9 is clean and spacious from the inside and Tikal doesn't seem to cancel much. I guess you and 95% of the passengers will take TACA on the moments they are priced the same as Tikal, but take Tikal on routes on which TACA would be a detour, more expensive or not available. On this moment, FRS-BZE is only like $40, while unavailable at TACA, which prooves Tikal isn't out to rip you off even if there is no competition.

They don't dump prices because those are illegal competition practices and in our countries they are never pinpointed.

Just for the records:

TG-URY: 1971 = 33 years old
TG-ALE: 1981 = 23 years old
TG-JII : 1981 = 23 years old

[Years when they where made]

[Info kindly given by Laxintl]

Average WU fleet age 26.333333 years old.

This is the answer to my previous question on reply no. 11.

Thanks Laxintl for your help.

Between an A320 and a well maintained DC-9, I'd go for the last one. I really hope that Tikal will be successful because competition will help travelers. Actually, $250 makes a weekend in GUA quite desirable.. so what are we waiting for? Lets start "con el pie derecho" this year, flying!!!

I just will add to your statement "a brand new and also well maintained A320...".

I never ever doubt that WU fleet is well maintained.

I will go as well as you, for the last one too, "at least once" [never ever fly one of that beauties before]. Unfortunately they don't fly to SJO. Not any DC-9 as long as I know.

By the way, I'll deduct from your reply that you also prefer not to fly the MX's A320 beauties, if you have the rare opportunity to fly a DC-9 instead. Note that your statement is in general terms. Am I wrong?  Wink/being sarcastic

Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the A320, I've never had the pleasure of flying TACA, but the babybuses I've flown (MX, UA, BA... I'm still working on my album) had been quite nice rides. Actually, I commend TACA new prices policy since will make easier to fly to Central America. My point was that, if and only if the DC-9 are well maintained, WU fleet wouldn't be an issue here. Anyway, happy new year to you and all the fellas at Central America.
