Message In The Snow On Approach To 9-R @ ORD

Tue Dec 28, 2004 4:00 am

I was on UA1192 (MSP-ORD) yesterday (December 26th) in seat 19A on a 737-522 (N935UA). On approach to ORD, I was looking out the window and to my surprise there was a message written in shoveled snow on a frozen lake. It read:
HELLO!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
9-R

I didn't get a picture because my camera was under the seat in front of me. Anyone else see this? If anyone is flying into ORD, sit on the left side of the plane, and hopefully you'll land on 9-R and see this!

Anybody ever hear or seen anything like this before?

Thanks,
UnitedRhapsody

P.S.: This is my first post on A.net!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Welcome to a.net!

Thats cute. The closest I've ever come to anything like that is reading the words people spell out in hedges. Haha.

A unique experience, nonetheless. Hopefully a picture will pop up soon!

I think I remember seeing ads on the tops of buildings in NYC, also at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, there is a plane with the AA symbol on the roof! You can see it on flight sim

UnitedRhapsody,

What time did your plane land? I was under 9R doing photography between 11:45am to 1:30. I may have seen your plane or even photographed it.

When you fly into TUL, there are a couple of houses of Oklahoma University supporters and/or alumni that have OU painted on the roof.

It was not uncommon to see the 'f u' phrase stamped out into the snow at school yards in the New York metro area. Have not flown into the NY area in the daytime when there is snow on the ground in years, so I don't know if the literary creativity of today's generation matches that of those in the past.

One of the malls near DFW (Grapevine, I think) has a big sign on the roof that is presumably directed at passengers looking out their windows on final approach.

A few years ago in Milwaukee, didn't some guy put a big sign (complete with nighttime light up) on his house or whatever which read "Welcome to Cleveland"?

Midway DC9-10,

United.com says UA1192 landed at 13:29 (CST).

As I said, it was N935UA (a 737-522).

It would be great if you have a picture!

I noticed the VS "Go Jet Set, Go" ad on top of a building on approach to 31R at JFK (left side of the plane) last week. Bet someones making a packet out of that! I didn't hear the Milwaukee story, but i did hear something similar, that someone had put "Welcome to Chicago" on the roof of his house located on the approach to LAX.

Cheers,

Jeff

There's a Super Target near ATL that, predictably enough, has a giant red target on the roof ...

I guess it helps the aim should WWIII occur ...

ATL has a TARGET store on approach from one direction that has a big target painted on its roof. I always thought that it must be aimed at arriving passengers. It worked for me. I have seen a few others too. A captive audience for sure- and its sticks out too!

In Chicago, the United Center has a big UAL logo on the roof, but I'm not sure any approaches fly over it (maybe 22R?).

A lot of the larger arenas have symbols/emblems/logos on the room. The old TWA Dome in St. Louis of course had TWA atop of it, and now it has Edward Jones, for the new name holder. The United Center in Chicago is very easy to spot, for this reason. I am surprised at some airports, more businesses don't have logos or emblems atop of them...particularly the Ikea Store in Chicago which is right near one of the landing paths.

I am also surprised there aren't more stories of messages for passengers in the sky. Maybe that's an idea for a google search...

It's kind of hard to miss a giant, odd-shaped blue and yellow building, even from the air.  Big grin

Target loves to do this. The Target on Route 1 in northern Alexandria, VA has one as well.

This store is immediately to the left of the arrival to runway 1 at DCA.

Where is that target located? I've arrived at ATL many times (often at night, though) and I have never seen this.

I was thinking of putting a sign on my house when I had friends coming in saying welcome to sunny Florida or welcome home...I think it would be funny to put it out in a rainstorm, but I don't think people would be able to see it!

Since we're on the subject of Target stores, as I recall, the Target Center (basketball arena in the Twin Cities) has a large Target logo on its roof as well.

Stlgph -
I've seen the logo on top of the United Center - but from the top of the Sears Tower.  Big grin I don't think you could see it from a plane, unless you were headed to/from Meigs.

The Toronto Star, one of the 4 pay dailies in Toronto, has their masthead painted on the roof of their printing plant, which can be seen from the 23 approach, and to a lesser extent to the 24s.

UnitedRhapsody,

We took off from Crystal Airport, and headed East towards Stillwater, just after Freeway 35 there was a lake on the right hand side that had the writing, I wish I could tell you the name of the lake, but seeing as we are the land of 10,000+ lakes, thats a lot of names to remember lol.

hey,

on the aproach coming to LGA over the White Stone bridge there is a field and in it is written welcome to NYC in flowers. I am guessing this is made for LGA.

When your flying into EWR and if you fly over the CO arena you can see on the top a "Work Hard Fly Right" add.

And If memory serves, at AMS on one of the little factories outside of the airport they have a sign painted on the roof saying thank you for flying KLM.

From what I remember, that Target near ATL is in a shopping center with a couple other stores. I think one was a Lowe's and they had a big logo on top on their roof, too.

On short final to ATL, I remember passing over a shack with the Confederate flag on the top of it, right before the airport fence. A nice first impression of Atlanta  Yeah sure

Down in North Carolina at a military base..I can't remember which one..maybe the one near Fayetteville, after September 11th a farmer painted his entire roof an American flag. He was along the approach to the airport and wanted the troops to see it everyday and know that we are behind them.

When I was in middle school, we lived on a lake just outside of Traverse City Michigan and I experimented with this. TVC sees tons of international traffic from Europe - ORD,STL(TWA in the past) ,IAH,DFW,MEX. I shoveled "TWA 771" (L1011,747 LHR-ORD) in the snow on the lake. It was huge and took me two days to do it... I am sure if someone was looking they could have seen it.

The Target Sign at ATL can be seen off the left side of the plane when landing on Runway 8L.

I flew through ATL a week ago and saw the mighty target. Another cool one is flying over the Ford Factory while landing 26R @ ATL. YOu pass bout 100 feet over this factory and there is a large FORD logo being proudly displayed.
