Nationwide Mercy Flight To Phuket

Tue Dec 28, 2004 4:38 pm

Hi all,

South Africa's Nationwide Airlines is sending its only B767-300 ZS-PBI to Phuket today carrying supplies and doctors etc. The aircraft will bring back some of the 300odd South African's trapped in Phuket.

Interesting that Nationwide's aircraft is being used. One would have perhaps expected an SAA or SAAF aircraft for the charter.

Anyone know of other similar charters from other countries?

Considering the history of Nationwide Airlines, it's not as unexpected as one might think: they started out as "Care Airways" (or "Airlines"), doing support flights for the UN and similar organisations - this was before they got into the scheduled airline business, but they do have the experience.

As for other countries: I've read that Germany is sending it's Hospital-Airbus to the region, and I know that several German tour operators have sent planes over to pick up tourists and bring them back here...

Frank

Danish/Scandinavian travel agent Star Tour reportedly should be sending 3 B767s to Thailand to pick up Scandinavians. The aircraft should arrive in Copenhagen on Wednesday. Anyone with info on the owner of these aircraft.. Icelandair? Air Atlanta?

Medical staff was travelling to Thailand with the scheduled Thai Airways flight yesterday and probably with SAS as well. Freighter services with app. 80 tonnes of medical supply, interim hospitals etc. is according to Unicef (who for years has had a giant storage place at Copenhagen Harbour) to be flown from Copenhagen to Sri Lanka today. Romours say that a Martinair MD11F should have been chartered for the flight, though "the usual" Il76 is more likely in my opinion... Perhaps someone has more info on that as well.

FedEx, the US Coast Guard, and a conglomerate of Miami-based businesses of all kinds have made an emergency response group focused on helping with natural disasters in the Caribbean. As we speak, the group is coordinating shifting those planned efforts to the South East Asian region; relief operations will likely take place out of FedEx's Subic Bay hub (Phillipines).

FedEx usually makes enormous airlift capacity available for relief in these kind of situations.

Virgin Blue has donated an aircraft to the Australian Government to carry diplomatic staff and emergency equipment to the resort town of Phuket in Thailand. The same plane will also be used to bring Australians home.

Its suprising that Qantas is not doing its bit to help, like what they did in Bali last year.
