When Will South African Join Star Alliance?

Wed Dec 29, 2004 3:22 am

I have a coworker who is planning a vacation to Johannesburg. He is planning this route: SFO-JFK-JNB.

The SFO-JFK leg being SA)">UA, the JFK-JNB leg, being South African.

The SFO-JFK leg would be UA16, and the JFK-JNB would be SA204.
He will have approx. 90 minutes to connect.

He was wondering that, because SA is planning to join Star Alliance soon, how easy the connection process will be (as far as transfer of baggege and ease of ticketing).

This trip is happening in late May 2005, will SA have joined Star by then?

I thought it already had joined... maybe I'm wrong, but I've heard all this hubbub about SA starting JNB-IAD service because of UA's hub and Star Alliance connections.
Scotty doesn't know...

The latest information is late 2005 or even early 2006 for official join date as a partner.
SA apparently has several large integration problems with I.T. and systems as well as a finicky Governmental anti-competition process to overcome.
They only just signed a MOU committing to join "within a year" a week or so before Xmas.
Having said all that, if UA and SA have interline baggage agreements, then the bags should be able to be tagged all the way through, leaving only the collection of boarding pass from SA at JFK to be completed.
From AvDaily on Dec 22 :
"However, SAA faces some technology and regulatory hurdles before it joins Star. It hopes to become a member by the end of next year."

Both SAA's and StarAlliance's websites mention 2005, but either I missed it or they really didn't mention a month... anyhow, I think I heard something around March/April...
Smile - it confuses people!

This is becoming almost as bad as "when will NW retire their DC-9s"

If anyone does know they are keeping quiet about it.
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

I'd go with AI's reply: late 2005 or early 2006. Certainly not before Oct05.
